The old game modes from Dirt 2 make a comeback in the third edition; the faithful traditional rally, land rush, rally cross, trailblazer and raid are still included much to the relief of gamers. Rallying still offers a unique sense of excitement with a wholesome amount of tension added as a result of competing against other human drivers. On the other hand, there has been little improvement in the Rally cross mode which remains prone to devious drivers who get into deliberate crashes, and this can become exasperating and frustrating at a point.
Unlike Dirt 2, you can start as a professional rally driver instead of rookie which helps to set the tone of the game the minute you are logged in. New modes include the extremely popular Gymkhana which has been a huge hit among DIRT fans and the head to head mode that allows drivers to fight things out on adjacent tracks
The improved vehicle handling is most evident in the Gymkhana mode which calls for a fair amount of finesse. Yet, the stunts of this auto playground are fiendishly addictive. Fortunately, the designers at Codemaster probably anticipated this and have included a separate triangle dedicated to the mode which allows players to test their mettle in the Battersea compound.
When trying DIRT 3 online, you can take the game for a spin in the multiplayer realm or play it safe with the single player race types all of which are available over the internet. The hardcore mode is the only addition on this front. It forces the driver to cockpit view while removing all assist, so you will be on your own here.
Dirt3 also includes a split screen multiplayer mode which is definitely encouraging given the dependence of the current generation on the internet. The party mode is offered with the promise of a slew of game types. These include the Transporter in which the player captures flags; Alien invasion where the objective is to smash into cardboard aliens and Outbreak which is essentially a tag game.
