Ford Key System Explained

Featured Replies

due to some confusion by some concerning keys and programming keys and remotes ive done this to explain the different key systems ie red keys blue keys and how it effects programming.

Ford Red Key System - 1994 to 1998

This system involves a red master key and 2 other user keys already programmed to the car ie ignition keys. The purpose of the red key is to put the car into programming mode to allow further keys to be programmed to your vehicle. Once you insert the Ford red master key, your car will enter programming mode. Then a further 2 keys cut for your vehicle must then be cycled in the ignition, each one being programmed in turn.

If you have lost your Master red key then the only way to program further keys is using professional key programming equipment to program a new master key, only then may further keys be added

Ford 2 Key System (blue key system) - 1998 to current

The transponders in the keys have varied over the years with this system it is identified by having one key with a blue corner hence the blue key system. You must have at least 2 keys programmed for the vehicle ie the blue key and the remote fob key. Once you have both keys programmed you can then add further keys without the need for professional equipment. This is done buy cycling the 2 programmed keys in your ignition in turn, thus putting your car into programming mode, then you can cycle a new key in the ignition and it will be programmed to your car.

blue key system remote programming

if you wish to add a remote to the car or have more than one remote its a simple process

1. Switch Ignition On/Off (II/0) 4 times within 6 seconds until a sound is made.2. Press any button on Remote until a sound is made.3. To program additional Remotes, repeat after 2 seconds after the sound.4. Turn Ignition On/Off to exit.5. A maximum of 4 remotes can be programmed.

to programme the key itself take a look in youre manual and you will find the info you need

Useful information, thanks!

What happens when the keys are sending a signal but will not open car. Tried re programming keys via ignition on off 4 times in 6 sec got the beep as stated but on pressing the key button on either of the two keys nothing happens. Both keys stopped opening the car at same time, locksmith checked keys and both sending signal. Ford 2 Key System (blue key system)

does this apply to flip out keys

No, the focus MK1 was the last focus using the ignition key with blue insert. On the Focus MK2 (and also the C-max) Ford used a different type of PATS chip. From the Focus MK2 it is not possible anymore to program extra ignition keys yourself.

The ignition keys with blue insert are used on the old TIMED PATS system. If there are 2 Original programmed ignition keys the owner can program additional ignition keys himself. If there is only 1 ignition key (or even none) the keys can only be programmed with a suitable Ford specific diagnostic system. The TIMED PATS system protection is based on a time delay during programming of the ignition keys. After the diagnostic system tries to access the PATS system there will be a time delay of about 10 minutes before access to the PATS system is granted.

On the Focus MK2 and onwards Ford uses the CODED PATS system. On this system ignition keys can only be programmed with a suitable Ford specific diagnostic system. After the diagnostic system tries to access the PATS system there will be code (OUTCODE) generated by the car. This code must be converted to a valid code (INCODE). After a valid INCODE is send to the car access to the PATS system is granted.

thanks for reply need to visit auto locksmith in new year as only have 1remote key for c-max

Have a look at my signature as I did manage to get a new key for about £60 all in, its much cheaper than going the formal locksmith way! For the same job on another car I had, it cost me over £180 from a locksmith for the same job!

hi there

Thanks for the information, I have read your thread about this, not quite sure how I can still get it done that cheap if no one can do it like that around here but the thing is, I need to find some where (or someone) who can clone the key or do it via the OBD port in my car, as I want the fully working one (alarm, and key car, immobiliser etc) but no one wants to do it around here, and ford told me I had to send my key away ! (which I know I don't)

To be fair you could probably modify the key body itself to accept the glass chip, then just c and see if any of them offer a glassall a few locksmiths and see if they can code a glass chip
