Fifth Gear Problems

Featured Replies

hey people im new to this but am stuck with this problem. i got a 1997 escort and its just had a new clutch fitted but i cannot engage 5th and when i manage to it makes a noise, i have been told that maybe when they fitted the clutch the bent one of the fingers and its rubbing up against the thrust bearing making hard to engage 5th and that's why it makes a noise like metal rapping when the clutch is engaged. could this be the answer or something else, when i took it back to the garage they said the gearbox needed to be replaced but this is to expensive for the cars worth

any tips

How far does the peddle come up before it starts to engage? Also it wouldn't hurt to check the gearbox oil level, maybe they laid the box down and some oil leaked out of the breather, if that's possible on an Escort box.

It would be worth finding out if the gear linkage can be adjusted or if it's just worn, even.(there is a chance that they never tightened something up on the linkage so it's worth a look)

Are you sure it's not just you that isn't used to the new biting point? If it bites sooner and your try to select the gear too late.

Nothing to do with the clutch, they haven`t reconnected the gear linkage in the same spot as it was b4.

Its to far clockwise on the clamp !Take it back and and get it realined.

Easy fix, takes 2 minutes on ramps.1 bolt and clamp is undone reposition and tighten bolt.
