Ford Fiesta 1993 Stem Seals / Head Gasket

Hi

I picked up a £500 1993 Ford Fiesta on eBay which was local to me. The car generally for its age is in very good condition inside and out but there are a few issues that I could do with some help with as my Haynes manual hasn't arrived just yet. Unfortunately the car had been warmed up prior to me looking at it so i was not aware of the problems before sale.

  1. Smoke on startup. I've run an oil and fuel flush through which for a couple of days I thought had done the trick but the smoke has returned and is fairly emabarrasing. Do I require any special tools to change the valve stem seals and what is the best/easiest method of changing them.
  2. The steering wheel squeaks but hasn't been as bad as it was initially. I've heard about replacing the universal joint on the steering. Is this a quick job to do. The car has no power steering and when approaching full lock is stiffer than I would have expected.
  3. When the car is cold it loses power and feels like it is running on kangaroo juice until it has warmed up. Not sure what to check here but it only happens when the car is on choke.

I've included a picture of my engine. Is it worth me buying a full head gasket kit and is there anything else I should do apart from servicing in order to keep the car running sweetly.

Richard
