Which type of grill on the MK6 did they fit first the chrome or the black slatted one (see pictures), did they denote different spec levels, or is that off another MK? I swapped the chrome one for the other type because it flows more air.

I'm sure the black slatted one was fitted to trim levels Encore, L, CL, LX the first grill you have I think was fitted to the Ghia version.

The chrome one was fitted to the Ghia and Ghia X models.

They look so much better than the honeycombe one when they are colour coded.

And as for air flow, the difference is minimal. It wont give the car any gains at all by changing it

I use a modified chrome grill on my track RS2K and can report the temp guage hovers just below center after 20 mins of revving around the 6k,as Vinny says they look better than slatted or honeycombe versions.Although the back of my bonnet is raised an inch on spacers to flow a tad more air.

jedamotorsport: Isn't the bonnet sealed along the back normally? As far as I can see there's only some small holes along the back behind the engine to allow the air in the compartment to escape, apart from underneath, of course. I can see how this would help cooling but at the expense of the blowers sucking in all the hot air important when it's 30+ and your stuck in traffic, which leads me on to the next point about how little air is pulled over the A/C rad, even when the fans blowing because of the small slot in the bumper and small top grill (OK when doing 35+ mph though, nice and cold- for an old car). When you look round the car park it seems that the Escort has one of the smallest areas for the ingress of cooling air, I did read on a website that the Zetec needs to run hot because damage will occur otherwise, something about the oil being 100c so maybe this is why the area for cooling is so small.
Is there any temp mod that can be done for summer to improve the air flow when the fan is running so the A/C is cooler when in traffic? It's forecast for 33c tomorrow and they always get it low (I wish my A/C was as good as when my dad's new Focus nearly froze my feet on a hot day in Spain)

I wouldn't worry about it mine runs hot too i mean when i'm constantly driving without stopping the needle will stay in the middle but like you say as soon as your slowly driving around town or stuck in traffic the needle creeps up pretty quickly (about 5mins) hits the L on NORMAL and the fan kicks in. I've renewed my cooling system so i know its running properly and like you i live in Spain and its always hot, but as long as your coolant is always kept topped up and your cooling fan kicks in when it should i wouldn't worry :-)

Would be nice to have a bumper with a larger slot in it to help with the AC cooling, it's a big fan but with a small area to draw the air over the AC rad/intercooler?

I was visiting my parents in Spain, I live in Poland at the moment (It was 35+ the other day, too hot by about 10c for me ).

I know what you mean there isn't alot of space between it all, mine to has air con but it doesn't work lol but saying that it think it's the blower unit because it's all on one fuse and if you put a higher fuse in you turn the blower on it really struggles to work.
Maybe try and look to see if there is any different designs of bumper out there?.

Looks like the fog light version would have better cooling, especially as the fan is more to the right (from the front) and so wouldn't draw so much air in from the slot on the left with the version I have. If a breaker has one cheap and the same colour then I might buy it, unfortunately though things are more expensive here if they know you're British, obviously because of the money tree that all British people have in the back garden.
There are quite a few Escorts on the road here though.

Hmmm, maybe next year, I've spent enough on it this year, after all it's only an A to B car, so you can keep your 6500 RPM and just give me 'nice and chilled' when stuck in the town traffic.
