will the new radios that are fiited in to fords nowadays(see pic) drop straight into a 99 focus dash????

I very much doubt it, the shape is completely different. The mk1 Focus is 1.5din and the mk2 is 2din. Also, the newer stereos are much wider than normal.

i have tried for a friend ...and no the y dont fit.
however with a lot of modification it would be possible.

Sort of related to this but if you fit an aftermarket head unit will the steering wheel mounted controls still work? Is there additional wiring that is required to connect a new unit to the steering controls or will the steering controls just become redunadant if a new unit is fitted?

They can be made to work with extra wiring, but a lot of this is brand specific (i.e. there are different wores for Sony, JVC, Kenwood etc.) and they run rather expensive. I just do without mine - it came with a remote control anyway!
