my name is carl just thought i would join because im thinking about fitting a performance air filter to my focus and dont know what to get as there is alot of choice

I've dumped a knn cone onto my 1.6 with a heat shield which with a cone is vital if you dont want to loose power and the noise is brilliant.

Air box filters are by far and away the easiest and most convinent option and usually the cheapest.

At the other end of the stick theres the knn typhoon kits etc and there usually for high performance cars and make an almighty racket and sounds the dogs nuts but you'll need to sell a few organs to afford one.

if yioure fitting the cone get adecent quality one ignore theses 10 quid bits of rubbish and get pipercross or k&n etc etc and fit it as said with the heat shield and a cold airt intake pipe going to it

I read disturbing things about these performance air filters some years ago.Is it true they allow more air into the engine therefore allowing better performance?But the disturbing thing is that if they allow more air than they also allow larger and more dangerous particles to get into the engine and increase wear.

i have also heard this and i know that it was a concern suddenly cone filters werent the dogs bollocks anymore it mainly refers to cheap or fake fiolters however as ive said before max power done a test on panel filters and cone filters and found that the factory airbox with a performance panel filter was better than a cone filter the majority of cone filters lose power especially as it gets hotter under the bonnet cold air intake will help but not much it comes down to what you want less power and more heat soak but a noise or better performance minimal heatsoak and no noise personally i use panel filters now typhoon kits etc dont work as they claim remember you can only suck in as much air as the airbox can hold while its filtering it and typhoon kits dont have big boxes on them. they dont create better performance they hinder but the noise makes people believe its more powerful when its not youde be lucky to get 2hp from one but when it gets hot under that bonnet you cann loose up to 4 hp even with a heat shield arond it

So what you're saying is in essence"Don't buy one".

all im saying is its youre choice mate you know the pros and cons

If someone gets lets say a KnN filter all they will be getting is a noise enhancer? Does it really give that much better performance?

Its all in the head it just feels a little shaprer on the throttle to me ive had my knn on for agggggggeeeesssss now and got it for 20 quid. Its ment for an escort 1.6 but sod it live a little it is VERY loud though and compliments the cat-back system ive got fitted to my car nicley hence why its still on there.

It is VITAL that you get one bespoke to the make and model of your car say for eg you stick a subaru impreza sti knn onto a 1.1 106 pug your asking for trouble and a major loss in power.

Another thing to watch out for carl is when you fit the system make sure it dosent rub on the underside of the bonnet like mine did thats really not a pleasent noise and then you need to go under the bonnet with a touch up stick .
