Hi,
I have a 1991 Ford Escort MK5 Cabriolet w/1600 efi engine.
Being partially disabled I want to upgrade to a newer engine with an automatic transmission. What would be a good swap?

Just buy an outobox for your car.They are readily available.
But to be honest why not do a search online for an Escort with an outobox already installed.
