i have a 1.8 zetec duratec he which is knocking BUT only when its warmed up for some reason the sound is like when your tappets start tapping thats the only way i can describe the sound its nice when ticking over but when you rev it the tapping noise appears ive just done a oil change but still no differenc...HELP please....i have been reading on other forums saying that it could be my butterfly plates on my inlet manifold???
mintalkin
it could be the swirl plates, it is a common problem the spindles that the swirl plates are attached to wear and then start to rattle,it has been known for a plate to get induced into the engine,so if you suspect they are rattling get them checked before the worst happens.

are the swirl plates the butterfly plates but wouldnt these rattle all the time as im only gettin the noise when warm? how do i check them my self would the inlet have to come competly off?
mintalkin
unfortunatley the only way to check is to remove the manifold,it could have been a lazy tappet but if you have done an oil change with the correct grade of oil they should be ok.with noises one only suggest what might be wrong and without seeing the car its hard to give a definate answer.
