i have a problem getting into gears i have been told that the clutch might need bleeding can this be done?
if so how would it be done?

get a haynes manual it should be in there

if its hydraulic you can bleed it, if its a cable you should be able to adjust it.
bleeding hydraulic clutches is a PITA at the best of times, really needs to be pressure or vacuum bled.

sorry to be the bearer of possibe bad news,but i had the same problems and turn out to be the flywheel siezed.are you getting any vibrations through the car?if so then you're looking at flywheel and clutch
