I have a 2008 focus 1.8tdci. I have always serviced my own cars but have never owned a diesel before. I'm due my 40k service and wondered is it as straight forward as the petrols or does the diesel need specific checks that can't be done at home. The prices places charge for a service is nuts....

I have the 1.8tdci and havnt "serviced" it myself but I have changed the oil and filter and can tell you that its easy.
only slight issue I had was unscrewing the old oil filter which was on VERY tight, filter removal tools did not work and in the end I resulted in driving a screwdriver through the filter (its only made of VERY thin metal) and turning the screwdriver to get good leverage (the filter then came off really easily but it was a bit messy)
the filter is located at the rear of the engine and can only be accessed from below, but I was able to get to it easily by jacking up the front of the car.
Another word of warning is that the range of acceptable oil (between the min and max line on the dipstick) is very small so when refilling the engine be careful not to overfill (as i did having to drain some out, real easy to do but annoying none the less)
Engine uses 5w30 engine oil, ford supplied me woth both the oil (£22ish for 5L) and filter (£9ish, cant really remember) for what was a good price at the time of looking
Im not aware of what else needs to be done for a 40K service but im just letting you know the oil change can be done at home no problem
