hi guys well finally summats went wrong with the focus when the engine is run from cold say 1-2 minutes and i stop at a junction if i take my foot off the clutch with the car in neutral i get a rattle from the gearbox sounds like 2 pieces of metal hitting each other if i push the clutch to the floor it goes away however after 5 minutes of driving the noise is gone theres no slip from the clutch no notchiness in the gear changes it goes into every gear fine and the car revs through the rev range no problem any ideas guys ive been told probably needs a clutch kit its the original now on 73600miles anyone else have the same symptoms as always help appreciated

I've a similar problem with mine and hopefully going to get release bearing done this week.

If the clutch is worn out, it's funny you are not experiencing any clutch slip. Having said that, clutch went on a Mondeo we had at 80k, just as the wife entered a roundabout, still got her to work mind. She said she was not experiencing any clutch slip prior to that. Now the last Focus we had the clutch did give us warning, nothing like what your experiencing, but it started slipping at 79k. Not a big deal to me and I was not in a rush to get it changed because it was six days before Christmas Day. But the wife nagged me "I don't want it breaking down taking my mum and dad out for dinner Christmas Day" So anything for a quite life, I got it changed the next day and ten days latter some Prat crashed into her and it was written off. That's the only two clutches I've had go on me in forty seven years of car ownership, so not bad really, as I only paid out for one of them.

So if my experiences are anything to go by, when you get into the 70/80k range on a original Ford clutch, you should be ready to fork out for a replacement. Now back in December 08 I paid £300 [cash] for the clutch to be replaced at an independent garage on the Mk1 1.8 Zetec so I did not think it was at all bad [Ford dealer wanted £502]

strangely enough i thought release bearing as well then someone said to me nah it would only make a noise with the clutch pedal pressed to the floor and stop with the clutch pedal released be interesting to see if the release bearing sorts youre issue out though ive heard just getting the full kits better i sourced parts take a look

about 350 ish was what i was qouted at an independant never asked ford yet this is my first clutch if thats what it is but theres no slip even from 5th at low revs if i floor it theres no slip there at all might just be me but when i had the car jacked up in neutral with the engine ticking over the front wheel was spinning away stopped it with my hand but it just spun up again might be normal when it was really cold the other day it sounded really bad yet dissapears when the gearbox warms up just hope it isnt a whole new gearbox job cant see how oil is checked every 6 months no leaks etc

i had the exact same noise in my old car...about 3 weeks and 500 miles later, the clutch release bearing finally gave in. cost 117 for a new clutch (eurocarparts) and 120 to be fitted...did a lot of phoning around to see who was cheaper lol

thank god ive got break down cover lol as im on permenant niteshift the next 3 nights so it will have to hold out till at least thursday the release bearing and clutch kit from ebay works at 99 quid inc delivery with a 2 year 20k warranty so ide save a few quid there might explain the tiny vibration i feel when idling as does the release bearing not reduce vibration? thought it was a mount but all have been checked and all are fine so no worries there clutch then coolant needs flushed and changed as its 10 years now the joys of motoring lol :)

doing the clutch yourself?

was very close to doing the clutch on my 1.6 but then sold it. the 2 engines and gearboxes seem quite similar - and it does look quite a good clutch to do.

god no no time for that 7 days on 2 backshift 2 dayshift 3 niteshifts then i get 3 days off last thing i can be bothered doing is cutting my knuckles and swearing at a gearbox lol defo going to a garage i havent done a clutch before and to be honest im not that confident engines brakes and suspensions im fine with

independant 357-375 toyal for clutch and plate release bearing and slave cylinder ford= 395 total using aftermarket parts all gauranteed so ill go with my local ford booked in for monday so heres hoping its all sorted and not something like the input shaft bearing

i'd defo put my money on release bearing, as said above. not a bad price to be fair...do you know what manufacturer ford will use for the aftermarket? i know valeo are pretty good, there is a clutch kit made by someone else (cant remember the name) for half the price...but from what i heard its not worth it.

as i was typing, i remembered a similar noise in my driving instructors car, when i was learning a few year back. anyways his release bearing went when one of my colleagues was learning to drive and he ended up slamming into an old van...its very sudden and wierd thing to go...in my personal experiance the bearing went, the clutch dissappeared really low down next to the floor and i had to balance it with the accellerator to get it to move and get it safetly of the road...what pursued was loads of black smoke and a horrible smell, when the clutch has cooled and you dip the clutch you will hear a very very loud squeel followed by more smoke and smells!

just giving you a heads up.

oh cheers lol didnt ask the manufacturer but the ford guys say ford gen parts it would be around 500 and the ones they have been using come with a 2 year gaurantee theyve fitted them before with no issues and keep them in stock as most people tend to choose them

sounds decent enough, especially the 2 year warranty sweetens the deal. the only thing is you have to prove (if it fails) that its not wear and tear.

tbf i bet there is hardly any difference between the gen and aftermarket clutch kits....apart from the approval stamp on the packaging lol

i can remember when i was looking around and phoned up a peugeot dealer, they wanted 250 just for the courtesy of taking the car to them and wouldnt touch the clutch i bought due to it not having a stamp by peugeot on it! yet its exactly the same manufacturer and part numbers lol

got told to stay well away from Mr. clutch and from the stories i heard i think i will.

in past experience most aftermarket parts are better than originals yeah they are not too bad at my local ford been really competitive and done good work for me . used mr clutch years ago 1 year and 5 months after it was done the clutch on the exs old citroen went again took it to a mechanic who stripped it and the clutch was a mess the pressure plate was almost worn through

I've got the same/similar noise in my gear box but it the same when cold or been running for a while.You can't hear it when your driving only when i'm parked up and not in gear.

It only happens when the revs just go above idle and when the revs drop back to idle.If push the clutch pedal down the noise goes.
I've been told it the Release bearing if not the input thrust bearing ,the garage who said it may be the input bearing said its cheaper/quicker to buy a second hand gear box from the scrap yard .

I'm a bit gutted as mines only a 57 plate but it has done 54k miles

I was going to leave it so see if it got worse ,but reading the replys i sould get it looked at ASAP???

its impossible to tell if its the input bearing without stripping the box if it was then yes its cheaper getting one from a scrappy mine goes away with revs and cant be heard itcan still be the release bearing garages will say its the input shaft if the noise goes with the clutch pushed to the floor thats utter rubbish it can happen with the clutch down or up ide find it unlucky if it was youre input shaft bearing

well i got the car back and the noise is still there though not as loud however now i get a noise with the clutch pushed to the floor or pedal up which didnt happen before i took it back and was told there may still be air in the clutch as its hydraulic it was rebled and is a bit better but im still not happy with it the clutch was slipping on the old one you could pull away in 1st 2nd 3rd and fourth gear without stalling the gearbox specialist said wait 1 week as the very stiff springs can in some cases cause gear chatter if it continues after 1 week to take the car back to the ford garage and insist its looked into

Hi artscot79,

Did you eventually get this problem sorted out. I'm having the exact same problem with my mark 1. Its had a new clutch from ford. Sounds like gear rattle, i'm thinking maybe the flywheel needs to be machined or the clutch they put in is faulty.

Details:
2002 Focus 1.6 zetec petrol, 66000 (clutch changed at 60k)

no i traded the car in as it was the input shaft bearing and i wasnt paying to have the gearbox removed again

Don't get too stressed over some gearbox noise in neutral. I've done literally dozens of focus and even more fiesta clutches (similar box), and they ALL make some noise this way. Input shaft bearing failure is not a common problem on these, and the bearing (on the concentric) will normally outlast 2 clutches. Bearing noise normally happens when the pedal is pushed, not the reverse. As you can see from some of these old posts changing the clutch did'nt sort it. I just think that it's a problem with the way the mountings are arranged that they transmit a little bit of gearbox noise through the body.

it seems to be very common to have gearbox noise in nuetral on fords even ford have admitted they dont know why

hi artscot sorry for bringing up this really old thread, what were the symptoms you were having with the input shaft bearing? can you remember?
