I have a 1989 Escort Bonus 1.3 HCS 4 speed, I can get 43 mpg, does this sound right for this engine?

Yea that sounds very good. The 1.3 is very underpowered for the size of the Escort, so i'd say your doing well. My RS2000 does 100 mile tp £20!!
