Hi mates,

I took my Focus to the local car washer today and the guy showed the damp carpet on the passenger side. It's only half of the passenger footwell close to the seat base and the door sill but really wet enough and I wondered how and when this could happen. I tried to remove the dampness by using paper towel pieces and left the front right window a bit open. Any ideas what might it be? Would it be necessary to remove the whole upholstery?

What year is your focus? If its a MK1 or MK 1.5 it could be the pollen filter cover (between the windscreen and the dash). It allows water to ingress and run down the footwell under the carpet. There is a revised scuttle panel to be fitted with a tray to guide water away from this area.

It's 2008 Mk 2...Would it be the same for Mk2?

Have you checked the rubber around the door? other than that was their any water on the roof lining? only thing I can think of is water has come down the tubesr from the roof, and its leaked in? other than that, only other place I can think of is side repeater, has the water come in through there?

Well, I haven't. It seems intact and firm to me, though. Roof lining is fine. And the repeaters are on the door mirrors, not on the fenders.

Yeah the problem with that is, the wingmirrors are attached to the doors, and sometimes the inner lining can be insufficient.

When I replaced my door mirror before I got rid, I took it apart, there was a polystyrene foam shape around, and I could see some water marks where water had dribbled in...

If the power washer has shot water into the housing, it may have then been shot into the inner door, dribbled / flooded through behind the door panel, and leaked at the bottom (baring in mind on my 55 focus, I was able to drop a screw through the door panel and it just fell out) meaning the hole is big enough for the water to just run straight out of

Long shot but it may be worth looking at... Take the inside plastic mouldings off from where the wingmirror meets the door, then open the door, and take off the entire moulding, there are a couple of screws, most are just clips! once you have taken it off, do you see any water ingress?

reminds me of when I bought my second hand Mk1. Front drivers side mat was absolutely soaking. You put a heater in and all the windows steamed up. In the end I took the floor covering up drivers side. Once dried out it never happened again, and I think I sussed it out.

I reckon during the "pre put on sale valet" they steamed cleaned the carpets and upholstery. And when the brush/nozzle end bit hit the cut away to inspect the Vin Number slit, the cleaning fluid meeting no carpet resistance, just flooded in.It was a father and son outfit and the son was no doubt just learning the art of valeting.

Last weekend I took the car to a local garage (not the official dealer). The mechanic spent a couple of hours to fix the problem, however, he was unable at the end. Then a fews day later, without using the air-con I left the car to the nearest dealer, and they found out that it's the drain pipe or some canal-like structure had been blocked by dirt and grime, and the solution was to clean it. That evening, I took the car to a Sonax service and made the front upholstery dried and vacuumed thoroughly. No fee charged in the dealer, and just 20 pounds in Sonax...

glad you got it sorted...another thing to look at for people with the same issue, is the windscreen sealant...thats is more common than you think.

So it seems it was one of the drainage tubes? good stuff! just dont understand why they are so open to get blocked. personally I think they should have a little filter, but then again ford would charge a lot for a tiny piece of mesh!

Where abouts was the part they claim to have been blocked?

Well, I didn't ask, all I needed was a solution. But I think, whatever that part is, needs some maintenance as it may recur some time in the future.

Yeah, I think (could be wrong) but where you have the strips going down the sides of the roof, so that you can mount a roof box, I think the drain tubes are under there, and they (I think) tend to run one half forwards, and one half backwards! if im not mistaken, the front half have drain tubes that go between the ceiling lining and the roof, and they then drop down to the front wheel arch, and the back have the same, only going to the rear wheel arches.

As for location, it will be interesting to hear exactly where they are!
