My 02 reg Focus 1.8TDDi diesel with 174k on the clock has recently developed an intermittent problem whereby engine revs increase on their own (without pressing the accellerator pedal) from approx 850-1050RPM when the car is in neutral. The revs return to the normal 850-875 when I 'lift' the accellerator pedal from underneath and then sometimes increase again when I release the pedal. If so, I have to turn the engine off and then back on again for the problem to go away. It started happening a week ago and has happened 3 times now.

Any advice appreciated.

Could be a few things, Throttle assebmly may need replacing, check return springs, make sure their not in need of replacing. could also be the Idle Control Valve (unlikely since when you raise the pedal the revs drop!).

Otherwise, give it a basic service, renew filters / fluids as necessary.
