Ok my dad gave me his old mk6 escort (1996 - petrol) as hes just gotten a mondeo, Now the engine was running up until a week or two ago, and just cut off he thought it could be fuel so he added some more now it has half a tank and still doesn't run, it trys to run and a few times nearly has run but then goes back to trying again things we have done:

Replaced Battery
Checked all fuses (Fine)
Checked Spark plugs (Fine)
Fuel Cut Off Switch (Hasn't been tripped)

My dad thinks it could be fuel pump gone, so that will be next thing to check, just wondered if there's anything else that we could of possibly missed and could check before we get a new pump.

Now that you mention it no i don't hear it kick in. So it seems it could be the fuel pump then, where would this be located, I'm waiting on Haynes manual to arrive tried Google come upon some American version which states its under the rear seat is this true for UK versions too.

Unfortunately the fuel pump is in the tank. Its possible to cut a hole under the rear seat to get at it, but you may as well just drop the tank. Its not hard to do if you have a decent set of axle stands.

Ok thank you, is there anyway of testing if fuel pump is gone just dont want to rip the fuel tank off, if that isn't the problem.
