hi I am new and In great need of help long story I use a mechanic (as I could not put a bolt in a monkeys mouth)who has been great up to now. only recently He fitted a timing belt ,water pump ,fan belt and new tensioner.Unfortunatly the new tensioner was faulty and snapped the belt as you can imagine all sorts of damage occured. but being a good guy he repaired the problems and gave me the car back last night it sounded ok if a little tappy. this morning though the idle speed was not quite right and after 15 mins driving when slowing down it sounded like a fish was getting slapped about the engine altough this went away after 2 mins I am not 2 happy and will give the car back tonight with the probs explained but not being mechanical I feel that I can be flanneled .This was the best wee car I have ever had I dont want to lose it and cant afford to replace

Hi Joseph and welcome

in answer to your question, your mechanic would have had to put on a replacement or second hand head, rebuilding the head is a specialist job, (repair or replace) try and find out if this is what he did, as the cost of a replacement head would cost £100 + or more, the tapping could be a shimming problem, which is all related to the head.

you could be asked to pay some of the cost.

Good luck with this..

I have never known a head not to need new valves, and in some cases it snaps the cam as well, in all my years working on ford dI's I would have liked some of your mechanics luck..

it did snap the cam but he replaced this with the tappets.but the rattle I heard was like something metal getting whipped about n like an old football rattle now my fan is coming on all the time. puzzled not loosing power though.

Hi

Sounds to me like the tensioner has not been installed correctly.

Another Thought is that the timing has not been set correctly, If it is too far advanced it will rattle (pink) when accelerating)

I'd avoid that mechanic in future after you've got this resolved. Timing belt changes and engine repairs after timing belt snapped should be pretty routine to any mechanic.
