2.2 litre diesel is the most powerful and "pleasant" diving wise engine in the smax diesel range. To the contrary of it's peugeot/citroen twins (engine is developed by the french in PSA) it doesn't have a twin turbo but a single turbo of variable geometry added by for research group.
Common to earlier builds is a problem which can be described as hestating and stummbling at revvs around 2000 rpms. The problem is rectified by ford by means of a ECU s/w upgrade. If you own a 2.2 diesel smax with this problem contact your ford dealer and INSIST (not all dealers are friendly enough) that it is a common problem and the fix exist.
Apart from that I am aware of no other common problem with 2.2 diesel motor, owners of this engine are welcome to make comments.

[color="#0000FF"]2.2 Is a great engine with loads of power and especially torque. Very smooth and quiet for a 4 cylinder.Does around 42mpg.
Had the stumbling issue as Sobaka explained but after a re-map at a Ford dealer all has been resolved.
It is a no brainer over the 2.0ltr being only about £700 more.....plus you get the better 6 speed box, larger front discs and those lovely twin pipes out the back.
