Ive seen someone selling a ford fiesta 1.25 zetec, but the bottom end has gone. What would you guys think it would cost to "fix" this? or would it be better to get a whole new engine?

i would go with a new lump less messing

Absolutely, I'm with the other peeps. The problem is to repair the bottom end and replace bearings the engine would have to come out anyway, and the sky's the limit as far as the cost of labour goes.

A new engine is probably a better bet, as it's a straight swap. Make sure you're buying from a reliable source and if possible hear the engine running beforehand. Visually check the engine over before laying down your hard earned cash and if buying from a scrappies or other breakers, check what warranty they offer as they might offer 30 days or whatever.

Essentially it's not that difficult changing the engine on these, I helped my sister's better half change his and we started at 3pm. We finished at 2am, and in that time we had removed the engine, changed the timing belt, replaced headgasket, new timing belt and a new clutch. We finished late because we didn't start until very late in the day, but we had the proper tools and engine hoist etc as a friend allowed me to use his workshop.

Ah right mate, so it looks like either repairing the current engine or replacing it with a new one is going to have to be done by a garage? Most sort of reasonably decent garages would undertake the change for you, but it would probably have to be sent away to a specialist company if it was going to be rebuilt. I'm not sure what the cost would be, but you would have to decide whether it's more cost effective replacing the engine with a new one (buying the engine and labour for fitting) or repairing the current engine (parts and labour costs for removing and refitting the engine and for repairing).

Your best bet for an engine? There's some specialist places about online that will deliver or help source you one from your local area if possible. You could try eBay, some of the people on there selling things are good and honest so if you're buying from someone who's genuine you're more likely to have some sort of assistance should things not go as expected.

If you click on those links above it will take you to eBay and it's only a few I have found on there. Some of them car be delivered via pallet for £60, I had a gearbox delivered in a similar way before. You may have more luck if you put your postcode in and then get eBay to find the closest to you.

Looks tidy for the money he's asking mate, so is it just the engine that needs attention? Providing you can sort out a replacement engine and get it fitted (make sure you check on how much it's going to cost etc beforehand) then I would say that's a pretty fair price for a MK4 Fiesta. Realistically, it could probably be broken for parts and you wouldn't lose too much (you may even get back all that you paid). The alloys look good and there's the lights, sideskirts etc (assuming they're going to leave the bodykit and alloys on the car).

When I go looking for cars, I always remind myself that in my experience, rust in the killer of older cars. Mechanical items (a gearbox, clutch, even an engine) can be replaced, I've got the bonus of doing all my work myself. The majority of times what kills these older Fords is rust. Rust is very much 'car cancer', so make sure that you check underneath and give it a good bang. You wouldn't want to replace the engine and spend £££££££ then come the MOT finding out it needs £300 worth of welding!

Yeah, cheers dan Id only have a budget of around £400-£500 though, so i dont know if it would be possible to do it, as id need someone to fit the engine, and labour isnt cheap nowa days! lol

Looks like an alright motor, but as has been said the engine will be replaced as a bare minimum, my only question is, if he has killed the bottom of the engine, then what else is dead under that body?

You should just buy my fiesta Zetec 1.25!! Perfect little car, rear privacy glass looks very smart and sporty already.
