Full Version: New Member Needs Solid Advice Urgently Please!!!

Guys, I have made a stupid error by pouring about 1/2 litre of transmission (Castrol ATF Dex II) oil in with my engine oil ( Shell Helix 5w/40). I have a 2003 Ford Escape.
What should I do? Is it necessary to completely drain the oil and start fresh? Or given the small ratio of Transmission oil to Engine oil would it be safe to drive?

Your informative responses would greatly appreciated.

Hi Shane and welcome to the forum,
Transmission fluid is generally a fully synthetic fluid and Dexron II or Dexron III is thinner than engine oil, so if the oil was left to settle in the sump for a couple of hours the transmission fluid would float on top of the engine oil due to the transmission fluid being lighter and more free flowing than the engine oil. it may also burn alot quicker than your engine oil and create some blue smoke from the engine so if you are leaving it in their, then i would check the oil level atleast 5 days a week

as a precaution mate,
if it was my car id purchase a can of wynns engine flush [url="http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wynns-Engine-Flush-425ml-51265-Cleans-Engines-Hydraulic-Systems-/261022053767?pt=UK_Vehicle_Oils_Lubricants_Fluids&hash=item3cc6207587"]http://www.ebay.co.u...=item3cc6207587[/url] this stuff is also available in your local motor factors, i strongly recommend you follow the instructions on the tin, and i stand by it because i have used it before,
all you need to do is park the car on a level ground area and prepare for the oil change, then put the full contents of the can in to the engine oil and close the cap tight on the oil as normal.
next start the engine and run it at 2-3000rpm for 10-15 minutes
then switch off the engine and empty the oil by removing the sump as normal,
then continue your oil change by removing the filter and fitting a new one also change the copper washer on the sump plug,
put the plug back in and dose in your new oil checking the owners manual for the specified level of oil required for your engine generally around 3.2ltrs but that is just a ball park figure,
check the manual for an accurate level.

Agree entirely with Lenny, its best for you to clean out complely, if that oil gets into the engine too much, then it is going to place a thin coat on the pistons, which will prevent the proper oil from lubricating and as such, will increase the risk of a seizure.

Thanks Jeebo mate,
encase we dont hear from shane again,
he PM'ed me yesterday to say that he had just flushed the engine through with the wynnes stuff he managed to purchase it locally and changed the oil to fresh he says the car is now running better than before it ever happened. and would recommend the wynnes engine flush as a fantastic product.
