Any recommendations?

First, welcome to the forum.
Second, if you want something a bit sturdier or more convenient try a company called Brodit.
They do brackets and holders that clip onto the vents or into the panel gaps on the dash, bit pricier but worth every penny.
I have them in my work car and they are bombproof.

We have bought a Macally car cup holder for our MK1 which doesn't fit first time, I am working on a way to adapt it.
