Your float may possibly be sticking in tank. Theyre not mega-accurate anyway at best a times
bart42

ok put £20 in yesterday taking it up to just under half a tank.with 134 to petrol on the digital display. now 49 miles later doing a few short journeys school run, wife need running about.taking son to and from college.the petrol light has come on at 50 miles remaining to fill up with petrol.also noticed the digital display for the miles to petrol sign keeps going down, then later it go's back up.giving a false reading???

sticky float

bart42

sticky float

how can i get rid of a sticky float???

stooge75
Cant remember if ford fuel sender units are accessible from under back seat but if not you'd have to remove fuel tank. Some1 must know on here though. The float should have a track it runs on & this is possibly dirty. Theyre expensive to buy new ive heard
bart42

well the fuel-pump went on the car, thought i'd run out of petrol phoned RAC.did all his checks and came up with the fuel pump not working at all.so going to get quotes from mobile mechanics..... :(

stooge75

why mobile mechanics? why not get it to a diesel specialist where you know you're gonna get what you pay for(more-or-less).

i think a mobile mechanic is inviting trouble mate

at the moment the car is on the drive.going no where.did some googling on the net for mobile car mechanic's in the area and came up with his chap who's been doing it for 30yrs.gave him a phone call, gave him details of car and he quoted me £200.£150 for the fuel-pump and the rest for his services....

jeebowhite

not a bad price in the grand scheme of things, especially when it saves you £150 towing it to a garage!

bart42

well the mechanic came this morning.couldnt do the job has the inspection hole was a fraction to small.so its going to be taking the tank off and doing it that way.and thats being done on tuesday now... :(

stooge75
Gone are the days when they'd just cut it bigger wi a grinder lol. Remember when i bought a car yrs ago, the whole had been cut wider with snips to get it out
jeebowhite

ouch, whats the new bill to come?

bart42

ouch, whats the new bill to come?

an extra £70....... :(

BigD

So, £270?  That's quite a bargain when you consider that getting the fuel pump replaced on my last car (Focus TDDI) cost me £1,147.

jeebowhite

That is still a bargain, I agree!

stooge75
Was it one from scrappy?
bart42

UPDATE:mechanic came done the job.car starts fine now total bill 280 QUID....the part came from lucas.now does the fuel pump sender need to settle has the digital readout for fuel keeps going down.??looked under car no petrol leaks nothing.

stooge75

ah good. another happy bunny :D

ps sorry, what digital readout? your display mpg?

its because the battery etc has been disconnected probably & its giving you your average all time mpg.it'll settle after a while & change slower, the more miles you do

having read that reply again,it doesnt sound like this is what you're meaning. strange

Mmm.thats not good.im stumped right now.
So youre getting same symptoms with the replacement fitted?
bart42

ok took the car out for drive around and it seem to have slowed it right down.the only problem now is when i started the car the yellow engine mangement light wouldn't go out.it drives ok.so might disconnect the battery in the morning and see if that helps.fingers crossed

stooge75

mmm.somethings not right there. have you scanned it with obd reader to see what codes come up? If i were in your shoes I'd be on the phome to your mechanic to get him to see whats up again

took the connection to the battery off yesterday and that seems to have taken the engine management light off.has for the digital readout distance to fuel.thats corrected itself and working great now.even the MPG has started to work now

stooge75

ah brilliant mate.love good news

jeebowhite

will take a few tanks of fuel to get the ECU back on track and giving accurate readouts. would be handy if you posted a link to the place wher eyou bought your parts from! might come in useful!
