  1. For a Ford Focus 1.8 (petrol) 79k miles what would the mpg be for purely urban driving ? I have read that it should be about 27 mpg but I often get 25-26 mpg when I only do town driving. Does anyone know what the conditions are when the car companies test the fuel consumption of cars ? Also I live in devon (UK) and each day I have to drive up at least 2 hills in order to get to my house. Do you think the figures the company give include driving up any hills and also take into account air conditioning use ?

I drive a 99 T Ford Focus 1.8 petrol and have noticed that when I drive somewhere (after engine has reached normal temperature) and I then switch off, when I turn the igntion key so that I can see what the position of the needle is on the temperature gauge I notice a slight fall even though you'd expect the engine to be the same temperature as it was 5 seconds before you switched the engine off ! Also, if I wait say 10-15 minutes after switching the engine off before checking the position of the temperature gauge needle, then this time the needle has fallen quite a long way from the centre towards the cold end. I drove my sister's Ford Fiesta (56 reg, 1.25 petrol) and tried the same experiment by checking the needle position just after switching the engine off and found that the needle was still in the same position as when the engine was on. Secondly I checked the position of the needle about 35-40 minutes after turning the engine off and found that the needle had dropped to half way between normal (centre) position and the cold position. Both these observations are different to what I experience with my Focus, particularly the second where even after 10-15 minutes my needle has fallen to nearly the cold position. How can this be explained technically and as I had the car for 3 years and cannot remember noticing this before does it indicate some problem that needs attention and what other symptoms whould the car have e.g. rapid or slow coolant loss, excessive oil consumption and are there any definite tests that can be done ? Also I was on a coach and noticed that the temperature gauge needle whilst the engine was at normal operating temperature was bang on the centre mark, between cold and hot. This contrasts with my own car in that on mine the needle is slightly under the centre position and never reaches it even when at full temperature. Is there any reason why a car that previously had a guage that was bang on the centre mark to drop because of a fault ?

When starting the car from cold in the morning and during the first journey the temperature guage needle after rising slightly then drops slightly (I sometimes actually see it happen) when for example stopped at traffic lights. 2. Secondly, after switching off the engine and then I turn the ignition such that the engine is off but the temperature guage is functional, the needle usually has dropped quite a bit from the mid position even though I have only just switched the engine off (so it is still hot). 3. Lastly, I feel the needle is never exactly mid way between cold and hot but slightly nearer the cold end. Would this suggest a head gasket problem ? Would any of these symptoms suggest a problem with the coolant pump, radiator or any related component ?

  5. I have a 1.8 petrol Ford Focus which has 78k miles. Since the car had a service last November I have noticed that when the engine is such that it is running at about 1500rpm e.g. at 30mph in fourth gear or 20-25 mph in third gear there is a noise that I can't remember being there before the service - perhaps a coincidence ? Anyway, I describe the noise as being like a droning sound but like I said only when the engine speed is about 1500rpm. I went to my Ford garage today and he went out with me for a drive to try and see if he could hear the noise. While he was driving the car he acknowledged that there was a droning noise but that it was nothing to worry about and that it may be coming from the gearbox. So I then said could it be a worn bearing or something serious but he said no. What's your opinion on this and how do I know if the noise is from the exhaust system ? Thanks
  6. This question refers to a 1999 Ford Focus 1.8 Ghia petrol. The car has done nearly 78k. I have read in the fault finding section of the Haynes manual that difficulty engaging gears is a sign of worn synchronizer units, although there are other causes of this as well. Given the age of my vehicle do you think this is likely what is happening to my car and how can I eliminate other possibilities ? Thanks
  7. I live in the UK. I drive a Ford Focus 1.8 petrol (the Zetec E engine). I would be extremely grateful if someone could tell me (if they know the answer) how far above the Maximum notch on the engine dipstick the oil level would have to be in order for the crankshaft to come into contact with the oil in the oil pan (Sump) ? I mean how many milli litres extra would be needed for this to happen and to cause the problem of the crankshaft whipping up the oil ? If you don't know what the clearance is between the sump oil level and the crankshaft on this type of engine do you think FORD would be able to tell me and put my mind at rest ?

This question concerns a 1999 UK Ford Focus 1.8 Petrol model (ZETEC E) I know from various sources how bad it is to get engine oil etc onto the timing belt and tensioner etc, e.g. from the Hayne's manual and various internet articles. On the one hand the thought is that there could be oil on my timing belt from a rocker cover gasket oil leak and so this could reduce the life of the belt or if it slipped on the idler pulley could cause great engine damage. On the other hand I think about all the car/vehicles on the road today that have timing belts and especially the older ones which are probably contaminated with oil etc from leaks of one kind or another but they don't seem to worry about the financial consequences of a belt failure. What are your opinions on this situation ?
