    tbh you'd be lucky to get massive gains on that engine without spending big bucks There's several 'better' engines that'll go straight into the mk6 than the 1.6 zetec, dunno about restrictions on races you wanna enter but I think the 2.0 zetec is a straight swap and that'd be a much better starting point than the 1.6 If you don't mind spending, this site may be worth a look: http://baileyperformance.co.uk/?page_id=7 They have on there a 1.8 zetec kicking out 239 bhp and a 2.0l zetec at 329bhp both with turbo conversions and megasuirt ECUs amongst other things, those guys're also pretty good with handing out advice if you're gonna do all the work yourself so it's worth checking them out

Hubby I've no intention of doing anything as daft as relying on a key key taped to the steering column mate, the whole idea sounds a bit chav tbh Stoney the keys are moulded plastic but there is a seam which suggests it's two moulded halves stuck together, changing the blades is a good idea but I've a mate who's off work at the moment and keeps telling me how bored he is lol He's a bodywork guy really but he's pretty good with most things car related, general mechanics & maintenance etc, bit clueless on stuff like pats issues so he's not been any help there but he's quite looking forward to spending an hour or two fiddling about with changing locks etc and getting a free lunch! He's also without a car at the moment and I told him he can borrow my other estate (escort tddi) when this one's back on the road so he's counting the days until the kit I ordered arrives, a mate like that's well handy when you got a car needing a spot to get through an mot ... especially when he paints it up to a professional standard once he's done!

I think I might've struck gold Found someone selling a 'set' off a same year gti containing both door locks, boot lock, petrol cap, ignition barrel, one new style remote central locking key, transponder ring, and ecu Forty five quid ... gotta be a bargain! I believe I should just be able to swap everything over and bob's yer uncle, will need to get a spare made but that's a minor issue

Thanks for the reply What you've said pretty much fits in with my thinking on the subject Yeah I'll have the key to go with the transceiver and if I could manage to swap the chip into an existing key it should work, but then I'd only have one key which is never good and getting another key made wouldn't be cheap either I've read that people installing after market starter kits etc do things like tape the existing key (or the chip out of it) to the steering column as the chip only has to be within a certain distance to the transceiver, a cheap and (maybe) cheerful 'fix' maybe? Definitely not ideal and I doubt I'd be comfortable relying on that not failing when I'm miles from home! Do you know whether the existing keys can be coded in or will they have to be new ones? Thought of something that might be a way around it, what if I could get hold of a the ecu, transceiver, keys & ignition barrel off another same model car, shouldn't all that then just 'plug in and work' ? I was also thinking a good auto-locksmith should be able to do the keys as coding keys is such a big part of what they do, should be cheaper than a main dealer

Got a car that won't start because of what's according to the auto-electrics guy I had out a faulty pats transceiver, his diagnostics gizmo reported something like 'No response from PATS transceiver' ... can't get much plainer than that The car is a 1998 Escort Estate 1.8 16v Gti I understand it's not quite as simple as just getting a replacement transceiver but I might need to get it 'coded' into my car/keys? There's a same part number transceiver with key on my ebay watch list (no-one else bidding on it -fingers crossed!), I'm wondering if there's any way I can avoid taking it to ford's and getting it 're-coded' as I've seen some info on the web saying I'd need to do Anyone know if there's a way around it like maybe swapping the chips in the keys over? (Or any other bright ideas) Also, shouldn't any auto-locksmith be able to do any key coding that's required? Could I even do it myself?

    For the price of a haynes manual it's not worth the hassle trying to find a pdf online, brand new they don't cost much and there's always ebay I got one for my escort tddi off ebay for just over a fiver ... get your wallets out cheapskates!
  9. Ah, on the tddi like I have the intercooler's mounted above the exhaust manifold ... I've heard them described as an 'interwarmer' lol I don't realy know anything specific about the tdci (22psi at stock tho seems quite a lot to me), just know a little bit from reseaching stuff about the tddi because I have one, boost dropping off though is I believe caused by insufficient fuelling needed to maintain max boost The tddi has a mechanical fuel pump so you can adjust fuelling by turning screws, but I don't think the tdci is mechanical in which case if you want gains a remap might be worth considering, do more for your car than just a boost controller, especially if the max boost drops off because the remap (should) aim to give best possible 'balance' between boost and fuel/air flow Incidentally, other than accelerating up to speed, in fifth with the throttle opened up enough to be boosting away at 15-20 on a motorway mine would be doing well in excess of 120kmh (that's 75mph right?), once up to that speed if I back off the throttle to maintain 120kmh steady it's barely boosting at 10psi Which makes me wonder if someone might have increased the boost on yours but neglected to do anything about fuelling, just seems to me if it's at stock to be producing that much boost you just gotta be putting your foot down pretty hard and only doing 75mph?   11. Escort Mk6 Cheap Brake Upgrade?

    Cheers for that vinny I have the standard 15 inch wheels on both cars though, the diesel has a set of wolfrace which I got cheap and spent much time and not an insignficant amount of money on paint etc to refurb, the gti wheels I I stripped the paint off and polished them to a mirror finish then lacquered, again, hours and hours of work! So I think for now a brake upgrade will have to wait, at least until I make the effort to find some bigger wheels and spend the time effort'n money refurbing those Anyone wanna buy a nice newly & professionally painted set of 15 inch wolfrace? ;)

He did ask what the STANDARD boost is I have a 1.8 turbo diesel endura-de with a boost controller and I've also tuned the diesel pump a bit When I first fitted the boost controller, before tuning the pump and with the controller turned right the way down it was getting around 12psi but when you fit an mbc (manual boost controller) the boost will increase slightly even before you turn it up so newbie wouldn't be far off when he said the standard boost was 10 You can't really use the figures for a tdci like lenny's as a guide for the tddi engine which the OP has, different fuel pump and ecu I believe My tddi escort currently runs at about 17-18psi though I have ran it at 20, even 22 for a test, but you shouldn't run it at more than 20 really without a front-mounted intercooler and usually when you do a front mount intercooler conversion you're also fitting new and maybe stronger pipework. Running it over 20 with the stock top-mounted intercooler you run he risk of turbo pipes blowing off and/or splitting, damage to the turbo itself not to mention the chance of blowing your head gasket One thing to understand tho, increasing turbo pressure without also increasing fuelling to match it does nothing for the performance of your car, this is where tuning your diesel pump comes in You probably have a lucas diesel pump and there's loads of articles about tuning these on the web but there's more than one way to do it, the most comprehensive (possibly the best) guide I found is on the turbo diesel owners club uk website

I've had the same or similar temp gauge issues on both a 1998 and a 2000 escort and renenwing the temp sensor and thermostat solved the problem on both cars, it's quite a well-known issue Whether or not this would solve it on yours or not I couldn't say, but they're cheap parts and easy to replace so I'd start there You didn't mention whether the mechanic replaced the coolant or even just topped it back up as you lost some, we can only assume he did, but personally I would've drained the coolant and replaced it with new
  14. Escort Gti Mk6 Mods?????

    Anyone wanting to port & polish their head inlet & outlet manifolds ... be careful and read up on it first! There's basically three things that MUST be avoided, these are: At all costs avoid making any contact whatsoever with the valves whether it be your dremmel/drill grinding/sanding bit, wet'n dry, wire wool, or pretty much anything else you can think of, when I did mine I took the valves out, did the port & polish, refitted the valves and re-lapped them at the same time. Re-seating your valves on any older engine is worth thinking about doing, plenty of how-to vids on youtube Do not polish the inlets to a mirror finish, exhaust yes, inlets NO NO NO! DO not open inlets or exhaust wider than your inlet and outlet manifold gaskets A simple run-down of what you SHOULD do: Get new inlet & outlet manifold gaskets, offer them up to your head in the same fashion as if you were actuallly fitting them, fix them in place with a nut/bolt or two. You will then see that the inlets/exhausts openings are usually a fair bit smaller than the gaskets and they can be opened out to fit the gasket, basically making them bigger openings allowing a more free flow of air, fuel and exhaust gases. I've seen allsorts of things suggested to mark up what you can take off, a permanent marker worked for me Inlets, start off with a grinding attachment (I used dremmel bits and a drill, dremmel's not powerful enough if you don't have forever), working in a circular motion as opposed to an 'in-and-out' motion until you've opened the ports out almost to where you marked with your gasket, then use a sanding attachment in a circular motion to take it the rest of the way. You're not looking to make the inlets perfectly smooth as this would prevent air & fuel from mixing properly, think in terms of opening out and making less restrictive rather than making things completely smooth when working on the inlets Exhausts, start off by doing pretty much the same as you did with the inlets, except this time you don't have to worry about mixing, the more you 'flatten off' and open out these (within reason) the better, after using the dremmel grinder and sanding attachments I used the following to continue smoothing out until I had a mirror finish: 180 grit wet'n dry 400 grit wet'n dry 800 grit wet'n dry fine wire wool (grade 0) and rubbing compound superfine wire wool (grade 00) and metal polish ultrafine wire wool (grade 0000) The wet'n dry gets things really smooth, the wire wool gives you that highly polished finish While it's all off there's no better time to clean up and paint or polish your rocker cover to make things look a lot nicer under the hood, and everyone knows that anything making things look nicer gives you masses more bhp! As it turns out I also have a gti escort (estate like my diesel, dogs won't let me have anything else!) that I've had off the road for a spell following a disaster caused by lending it to my sister, porting and polishing the head is one of the things I've done while it's not been getting used so as yet I don't really know for sure how much difference it's made, and even after it's mot'd and back on the road next week I won't know because I've done a few other things including fitting the 130 bhp 2l cams

I've got 2 mk6 escorts, a gti and a 1.8 tddi, both have had some tweaks & mods done and run a bit quicker than standard, so I'm thinking it might be a good idea to get some better brakes on there before I do any more to them Is there a cheapish way way to do this, like maybe using discs and pads meant for another car? I know some 2.0 mondeo parts a direct fit onto the mk6 escorts and each gives some improvement or other, I'm wondering if the same applies brake discs'n pads
