  4. Petrol Leak! Ughhh!

Hi guys, I took the car out for another 150 mile motorway trip, on return I popped into local Shell to fill up. Turning the engine off, I heard some weird noises, like spitting etc I noticed the temp gauge was normal. Anyway, that lasted for like 30 secs, I immediately put up the bonnet up but nothing was obvious, no steam etc. Anyway, I proceeded to fill up and went home to nap. Today, I got into the car and put the windows down because it was hot and I could smell petrol. I drove for about 5 mins and came back to notice there was a patch of petrol probably the size of a dinner plate on the drive way. I don't think a lot leaked out because the gauge was still above full. Anyway, got under the car to have a rudimental check, noticed the previous owner put a new fuel pump in so it cant be that. Umm..there isn't any obvious fuel leak source I can find. But the tank itself does look quite pitted and rusty on one side. Question is: Have I written this motor off? how expensive is it to replace the tank (assuming that's at fault) and if its fuel lines, can it be fixed near the region? OR does the whole lot need to be replaced? How expensive is all this? I hope its a cheap hose or something. Thanks

  6. Warmed the car for 10 minutes before setting off, everything was working on the dash, put it into reverse and reversed out of the drive into the street and then put the car into first, looked at the dash and everything was dead (the speedometer, rev counter, fuel and temperature gauges and the digital LCD mileometer- the whole lot- dead). Thought I stalled it, but the engine was on..so I bravely drove it back into the drive and took the bus. ;) Don't want to drive in snow and ice with no gauges thanks Has the snow killed it? I hope its a simple fuse.. Help. Please. Watch the YouTube video link in the title (the forum doesn't let me copy and paste the url or link it using the button) Thanks guys
  7. warmed the car up for 10 minutes, like every day...Reversed out of the drive, (everything was fine on start up and when I got into reverse)..so reversed into the street and about to go into first when I noticed that everything on the dash had died. I thought I stalled it, gave it some revs and the engine was on..so I was confused. It was a snowy start today, the colds murdered it..I hope its a cheap fix like a fuse. Help me out guys! :/ p.s. see the YouTube link on the title (wont let me copy and paste on here nor will it let me link it using the button) thanks guys
  8. Revs Hunting 2000-2500

In need of some help please My ford focus 2003 1.6 zetec SE has developed a problem. Started of last year in the winter when car suddenly woudnt start but after many atemps started eventually. But ever since revs have been hunting between 2000-2500. It also appears to have lost power in that band range. Also fuel consumption higher too as this was confirm when the car was close to failing emissions test as it had high reading. I have since replaced throttlebody and idle control sensor. Also the vacuum hose at the intake with a new one. Dont what to keep replacing stuff. Thats why i need help Btw idle is fine when cold or warm, the problem is band specific

  10. Hi there, First post here as I'm looking to buy a 2006 1.8 TDCI Titanium S Max, I went to see the car tonight and was all set to buy it when I heard a strange noise at about 2000 rpm. Its hard to describe the noise but it was almost a spinning scrapey type noise, heard at about 2000 rpm in 2nd/3rd gear when driving but also when idling the car - always at about 2000 rpm, heard both when revving up and down. It seemed to be coming from the front left of the car but when opening the bonnet and revving to 2000 rpm I could hear it within the engine bay somewhere. It didnt affect the performance of the car, the owner said he'd heard it for a while but it was intermittent and never affected the performance, he took it to his garage but they couldnt reproduce it. Driving the car was fine, both when hearing the noise and past 2000 rpm (it didnt affect acceleration etc). It may well be something minor (engine mount?) but my fear is that I buy the car and it turns out to be something major :-( My first thought was that something was loose and being vibrated when the engine reverberated at 2000 rpm (hence hearing it in gear and idling at 2000 rpm) but I'm nervous about buying without having a clue what it is. Does anyone have any ideas please? Its urgent as he apparently has another buyer lined up so any ideas would be massively appreciated. Many thanks in advance!
  11. Sound 2000 Blank Screen

Hi all, I've been having some problems with the radio in my MK4 escort lately, I believe it's a sound 2000 model from 1990 or so. A previous owner decided to cut the original radio connectors off, I soldered them back on and it worked perfectly for about a week. But now I turn the radio on, it lights up but the screen is blank. It gets no radio signal either but it plays cassettes just fine. It doesn't even prompt for a code when it has been disconnected from the car which is something it did before. The same thing also happens with a spare radio of the same model I have lying around which leads me to believe it is something to do with the car itself. I checked all of the connections to the radio and they all seem to be fine. Does anyone have any suggestions to what is wrong or how to fix it? Thanks

  16. Starting Problem

I have an X reg Mondeo Mk 2 ? version (reg Sep 2000) just refused to fire up. It cranks over fine plenty of welly in battery but will not fire up. Had a simillar problem back in May when again it would not start. It was very hot day and car had been for a long run. After leaving it for about 20 mins came back and it started (ie fired up OK). Felt like the old problems with vapour lock which I didn' think you get nowadays with modern cars.. I was confinced it was a fuel related problem! Pump maybe ? However it did it again couple of months later. But this time I left ignition switched on for a couple of mins before cranking and the egine fired up no problem. Yesterday went to start engine from cold and although it would crank over again battery was good it refused ti ignite. Called RAC out but was unable to pinpoint exact problem. His laptop didn't work so was unable to get a fault code, He thought it was a crankshaft sensor ? Fuel was OK i.e plenty of petrol not diesel! Fuel was not getting to injectors.Tested the pump but it was running OK. Had to get it towed to my garage. Still awaiting diagnosis result. Has anybody had similar experience and got any suggestions or results. I am rather mystified ?
  17. I've had my fiesta a while its done 135k on an X plate. Recently I noticed that the heaters are not getting as warm as they used to, which is bad heading into winter . They only seemed to get warmer when the engine was revved I know that the heater control valve can be suspect but mine does go hot and cold. I had an 88 degrees thermostat in it so changed this to the 92 degree one, radiator and thermostat housing has been changed. The questions I have are : How do you know if the heater matrix needs changing ? What the correct method for bleeding the system, is it method a or b ? A : Run engine with expansion cap off till fan cuts in ? B : Run engine with expansion cap on till fan cuts in let cool and top up ? Whats the best way of clearing an airlock ? Also there is no temperature gauge on the car and the warning light has never come on, but does light up just before starting the car so i know it works. Thanks in advance.
  18. Hey All, My gf's car decided it wanted to spurt coolant all over the engine bay today out of a hose that seems to have broken off something that goes towards the dashboard, at the back of the engine bay, here are some pics to help explain... Does anyone know what part that box is and if it needs replacing or is it fixable? Many Thanks!

  20. 122,000 Miles And Roughing It!

It all started when I accidently started it in gear - then while accelerating onto motorway it didn't - would not accelerate much and heater plug light was flashing. got of M6 and stopped - restarted and fine. Ever since then it has been going into "limp mode" and loss of power - poor acceleration - the for a while all fine! tried so far. mates diagnostic - error 2262 Diesel "specialist" Delphi error 2262 I.e turbo lack of pressure... But turbo seems fine - turbo arm free.. - and specialist says never seen code before ( all over the web!!! ) So air mass swapped, injector cleaner ran through, ECR cleaned, NOT split inter cooler hose, Cam sensor changed Now if I rev - sat still - up to ~2000 rpm - and back off it gets VERY rough - horrible. Since changing the cam sensor the heater light has stayed off - but too early to tell. Engine management light on all the time Tried " twitching ign. on/ff 20 times" as advised on "johns" website - no worky... So - you think changing the cam sensor ( from a black one to a new grey!!) has worked? I don't want to waste another £60 ON DIAGNOSTICS TO FINE ERROR 2262 is / is not present - told me nothing the first time. Feels like a death rattle - Mind you it does most of the time ( long history of chasing more lemons round the crank shaft pulley / belt tensioner game ) If it ain't broke dont fix it - as long as it does not go into limp mode again
