  1. Pressure In Coolant System

Hi all, I have recently brought a Ford Focus 1.8TDCi Duratorq 2008. When I came to check the coolant level in the system (cold engine) there was no coolant visible in the expansion tank. When removing the expansion tank cap, the system lets out pressure and the coolant floods back into the expansion bottle through the large hose located at the bottom of the tank. Surely when the engine is cold there should be no pressure in the coolant system? Thanks in advance!
  2. Hi guys, Just wondering if anyone who either owns or has owned a MK1 or MK1.5 Focus could help us out and list any common faults or things to look for when purchasing one of these cars? Basically what I am trying to do is eventually put together a comprehensive buyers guide so that if people come to out site looking for info on common faults on the MK1 then they will be able to find everything they need on our site. Please could you add any common faults you know of on this car and pictures if you have them We will let it build up for a while and then get it turned into a decent buyers guide. Thanks for your help :) James
  3. Hi everyone, I'm not sure if anyone can help me but I would be most grateful for any advice. I went out to my car this morning, it was iced up. I poured Luke warm water over the front and rear windscreen and then set my wipers going, I also sprayed some screenwash. Well the first couple of sprays and swipes from both wipers worked fine and then suddenly everything stopped. My first thought was that the fuse had gone. However. A very kind man (a customer at work) overheard me on the phone to a garage to check whether they stocked fuses and said he had been a mechanic for 20 years and would have a look for me. When he returned he said the fuses were fine. He didn't think it was the motor though, as the front, rear and screenwash had all stopped working. He mentioned a possible loose connection? Then when I spoke to a friend, he said that he still thought it could be the fuse - he had had fuses before which looked ok but had, in fact, blown. I hate to admit it but I'm completely broke at the moment so I was hoping it would be an easy fix. I also can't get my car to a garage until Monday and I'm working tomorrow so I could really do with it for then. With the snow though, I just can't risk driving without working wipers. Does anyone have experience of this problem? Or know of a possible cause and/or fix? It's a 2004 ford KA sport. (1.6 litre) I would be so grateful! Many thanks in advance
  4. Hi all, In a similar style to the MK1 Focus thread I started yesterday I am also looking for common problems on MK2 Focus models. I will also be looking to eventually put together a buyers guide for these models so any feedback you could give would be much appreciated! :) James

  6. Ford Focus Mk1

Hi All, New to the group, I have a Ford Focus mk1 1.6 automatic, no issues up until now! Where to start ... When pressing the brake to slow down there's a noise coming from the front of the car (suspected brake pads/discs) With it being an auto if I keep my foot on the brake pedal my car starts making a hicup/chugging sound which can be felt on the steering wheel - to stop it I put it in park and handbrake Any ideas as it's driving me crazy!! (Nothing appeared on the diagnostic machine)
  7. Hello there, I hope not to get stoned for repeating questions as I am sure what I write here has been covered already. I have done my browsing on here and I think I have some of the answers but I would like to get the full picture so please bear with me. After a long period of driving Japanese I ended up having a 2005 Focus Estate with a 1.6 TI-VCT engine. I have had it for a good week now and as far as I can tell after about 500 miles I like it. When I bought it the coolant temperature guage was suspiciously steady at 60 C even after 15-20 miles. I think I should have thought of the obvious why the previous owner parted with it. I suspect my thermostat is stuck open or semi open. The tests I have done so far: Set the on-board computer to show the engine temperature ( I hope I am right saying this shows the cylinder head temperature) started the engine and put my hand on the radiator. Started with the radiator being cool and the temperature in it started to build up very quickly , although the engine temperature was only showing about 86-88 degree C. The coolant temperature gauge was still on 60 degree C. Then I spent another 20 mins sitting on 1500RPM (still on the drive) to get the engine temperature up to 120-125 degree C. At this point the coolant temperature guage had reached around 80 degree C. I carried on warming the engine to test if the fan was working as I had never heard it come on before. About 10 minutes later at around 142-143 degree C I finally could hear the sound so the fan was working. At this point the coolant gauge was just under 90 (ever so slightly before the middle mark) so I guess the gauge is not the most accurate as people here say the fan is set to come on around 100 C. I also took the car out for a drive a day later. I drove 20 miles to see what would happen under life like conditions with the computer set to show the engine temperature. I was doing a mixed drive, revving the cr@p out of it as well as go as slow as possible and the engine temperature just would not get over 80 degree C. I could only push it over when I rolled onto the drive and let the engine run for a few more minutes. The other thing I think my be a give away (I might be wrong) that from Peterborough to Birmingham and back with no traffic issues I could do near enough steady 65-70mph and the coolant guage would not move from 60 C and my mpg when I refilled the car worked out only to be 32-33mpg (around 8.8 l/ 100km). I would have expected more on a long run, given that the temperature was relatively mild at the weekend. The car pulls OK otherwise and does not judder or misfire. One strange thing I think is also worth mentioning that when I checked the engine temperature from home to work this morning upon turning the key to the second position whilst holding the trip computer button and selecting the engine temperature the starting temperature was about 43 degree C. I found it a bit odd as the car had not been driven since the evening before. I would have expected it to be around 10 C , same as the air temperature. Here are my questions: 1. Do you guys think it could be thermostat or is it something else? 2. Is it possible that my temperature sensors are not working or giving false reading? 3. Where is the coolant temperature sensor situated in my focus? 4.What temperature does the engine temperature sensor actually measures? Is it the cylinder head? 5. What is the usual operating temperature measured by the engine temperature sensor ? 6. At what temperature folks would you expect the thermostat to open and let coolant go to the radiator? 7. What is the temperature set point for the radiator fan? Is it 140 +/- 5 degree C of the engine temperature or is it the coolant at 90 -/+ 5 degree C? 8. Which temperature sensor feeds the ECU (PCM)? And would the ECU give the signal to the gauge on the dash or would it be a separare unit? Sorry for the lenghty post, I am new to cars although have been driving for 15 years but only just recently started to show interest in how they actually work. Thanks in advance! Pete
  8. I have a 56 plate Fiesta MK6 Zetec S, done 99k and hasn't let me down yet, untill recently. I first had a problem arriving at work after a 26 mile commute, noticed steam coming out of the bonnet so lifted it up to find there was NO coolant in it what so ever after being serviced 2 weeks before. so i topped it up and kept an eye on it. 2 months later after everything seemed fine, i was on the same commute and my engine temp rose from 90 to 120 in around 45 seconds while idleing in traffic, so i pulled over as there was luckily a petrol station right next to me and filled it up with coolant, then resumed on my way home, checked in the morning and all semmed fine, got to work this morning, checked again straight away, all seemed fine, checked an hour later after explaining my problem to a colleauge and it had dropped to basically 1/4 of the amount i had put in?! but the car had not moved, there are no puddles and no "mayonaise" in the engine oil. any advice would be appreciated on this as its doing my head in. thanks Chris.
  9. hi everybody, i know this has been brought up 100's of times. I Drive a 2002 1.8 tddi focus and my heater doesnt work. in more detail, i first noticed it a few weeks ago when driving through france, it was 34 degrees and when i pullled into a services the fan was rad running for 3 or 4 minutes when i pulled up. i was thinking with the heat that is out there it must be getting hot, so when i left the services i dropped my windows and put on the hot air, which stopped working after a minute, and only came back at a services. Thermostat so i assumed it was a thermostat stuck open, so i changed it, problem seemed to go away but after a long drive it came back, fan running again when i came into a services, and no hot air..... this time it was 2 degrees outside, Airlock, Im thinking an airlock is in the system but i cant seem to find it, also my thermostat seems to be allowing hot water through it the whole time so maybe the new stat is screwed again. all help appreciated guys
  10. Issues On Starting Up

Well since my original post the ignition problems seem to be getting worse. it started with when putting the key in and turning the ignition it would occasionally start beeping, when it happens it will beep when engine is first turned on, when I put it into gear, when I first set off and then once more as I get the speed up. Since then the problem has now turned into when I put the key in and turn it to the second position normally the instruments would light up then I could turn it on, now it doesn't seem to be connecting as the instruments won't light up unless I hold the key in place. And now, for the last couple of weeks, the engine seems to just be cutting out, it's not me stalling the car, it just seems to be as if it is all things electrical just switches off and cuts out. The 3 times it has done it so far the first couple of times it was when I was stationary, tonight I was driving home and turned the corner and it cut out while I was still in motion. At an absolute loss and scared to drive the car and scared that it could cost a fortune to fix [afont=lucida sans unicode]Hi, Have a problem with my 57 plate Focus Ghia. Hoping someone can help or give any advice. This doesn't happen everytime I start the engine. It seems quite random. When I put the key in there is a beep that sound like some sort of alarm, then when I put the car in gear it will beep again, and then it will beep once more as I start to pull away. Tonight it did the same thing, but after I reversed out of a parking space the engine cut out, started it back up, beeped again and the cut out again, but the key actually flipped back to the off position, started up again, beeped at me again but no engine cut off this time. Performance isn't effected, and no other issues with the car itself. But I'm hoping someone might be able to shed some light on what this might be. Thanks Gillian

  12. Hi, I hope you can help... I noticed my engine coolant is on the MIN mark when the engine is cold, it goes up when hot, but not by much. I want to top it up so it's between MIN & MAX when cool. I went to the Ford Dealership and bought some Ford SUPER PLUS PREMIUM coolant today. I noticed it was more a yellow/light orange colour, compared to the pink colour that is in there at the moment. When I asked if they had the 'pink variety' the guy there said that they only have one type, and that it's fine to top it up with the one they gave me, even though it's a different colour. He claimed that "the coolant is always pink from the factory". I have left my engine to cool and was about to top up with a 50/50 mix of coolant and de-ionised water, when I thought I best check the manual, in which it states: "Do not mix different colours or types of coolant in your vehicle". I'm hesitant to do what should be a simple job, what with being given conflicting information. I'm not looking to drain all the coolant, I just want to top it up, so I'm wondering if anyone knows if it's safe to do so with the coolant I've been given? Any help would be much appreciated.
  13. Mk5 Heat Problem

I've heard and read that fiesta MK4 and MK5s can have a heat problem with either hot or cold constantly feeding through and not being able to change the temperature. Mine is doing the exact same. It's feeding through constant hot air. After having read a solution, I thought it could be a thermostat problem. The guy I bought the car from told me he'd already changed that not so long before I bought the car and it was bought in March. I then read it could be a heater control valve problem. I changed the heater control valve and it worked! For a day or two... No I'm slightly stumped as to what next to look for. I don't believe it could be the matrix. I don't think there is a blockage anywhere otherwise it wouldn't have worked as soon as it was swapped. I'm reluctant to think its the connection as I checked that while swapping over the HCV and it seemed OK. Plus, it wasn't all that long ago. There's definitely no Leaks. The head gasket hasn't gone and its not on its way out. A few people had mentioned the heater control panel might be an issue. The fans are working on all settings but there's no wires running from the temperature knob. It's all running from the fan switch, the bottom of the PCB board and the 12v power supply. I don't think it could be the HCP neither becauxe it was working g when the HCV was swapped over. And I'm sure the wiring is normal anyhow. Has anyone got any ideas? I've searched all over this forum and I can't seem to find the answer. I'd rather not take it tons mechanic and part with my money haha. Thanks guys.
  14. Can Anyone Help Me Please

Hey Guys I drive a Ford Fiesta 1.2 Zetec LX When ever I am driving my car suddenly loses its revs, they completely drop to zero and I'm unable to use the accelerator. this is until I put my foot on the clutch, as soon as my foot touches that clutch the revs are instantly restored and jump back up to where they should be. there seams to be no rhyme or reason to this as it happens in any gear and in all weather conditions. any ideas you guys might have for me would be greatly appreciated! Thank you
  15. Flickiring Dashboard Lights

  16. Hi all, Ford Focus Mk2, 1.6 petrol. 2005 / 55. So yesterday I discovered that my engine coolant level was looking pretty low (maybe half an inch below 'min' when cold). No engine warning lights up to that point though. Today I took the car out to pick up some coolant / battery top up water (yes, I know that I probably could have used tap water!) to give it a bit of a top up before I decided what to do next. It was on the way back home that the fun began and I could feel the car juddering while driving up a hill until it got worse and worse. Experience told me that this was probably a spark plug / coil pack related issue. Still, at least the car still drove so I wasn't completely stranded, which is more than can be said for my previous cars. At this stage I hadn't twigged that the coolant issue was in fact related to the juddering as on inspection I discovered coolant / rusty water in / around the core plugs and it had made quite a mess. At least it solved that mystery. The frustrating this is that this is the very same issue that was discovered by my garage in Feb last year while they were doing the timing belt, except it had only got to the stage of making a mess / causing some corosion and hadn't had any noticeable impact on running or performance. I should also add that my car appears to have the modified screen washers and having done a few splash tests, they do seem water tight in my opinion. I only bought this car 2 years ago, directly from Ford, so I put my stern face on and drove (noisily) over to Ford and kind of dumped the car on their front door step and insisted on a resolution. I spoke to the head of servicing right away who said that the fault would be diagnosed and a solution decided at no charge, so at least I don't have to pay for them to find the issue. I accept that my car is gettinng on a bit, but I don't think it's acceptable for this to be happening once, let alone twice. The first time it happened was 6 months after I bought the car, so wasn't covered by a warranty. What stance should I take? What are the questions to ask? What is the actual solution so that I can check what they say against what you guys say? Can anyone explain to me what is actually happening to cause this and Is there a permanent fix? I'm hoping for a call back from them tomorrow. Thanks for any help or advice that anyone can give. J
  17. Hi, I would be really grateful for any advice on this issue. When driving my 1999 1.8L Ford Focus (V Reg.) the speedo sometimes drops and the rev counter also does. There is a noticeable lack of power and in a couple of seconds this is rectified and the dials are active again. I've read on a number of forums possible causes of this issue, but was just wondering if any of you knowe what the problem is and whether it's advisable to go on a long drive with it? Could the engine stop completely or is it just a non-critical electrical fault? Thanks, Ellis
  18. Leds Not Working

Hi, been following the forums since I got my focus 2 years ago and finally decided to join. I've taken inspiration from a lot of members and started converting interior lights to leds. First done the boot and glove box to test it. Looked good so got bulbs for rear reg plate. They worked perfect when I fitted them first but its been a few days and they stopped working. Has anyone any ideas or advice what it might be? Cian
  19. Ka 2003 Loosing Coolant

My daughters KA is loosing coolant. . There is water on top of the thermostat housing so it is either a leaking hose or a failed O ring. How can I tell? If I need to replace the housing I've seen them on Ebay for about £15 but I can't find any instructions anywhere? I can't even get the air filter housing off so is there anything on the internet or do I need a Haynes manual and if so which one? Thanks Chris...
  20. A woman recently struck from behind by another vehicle claimed that the reason she was stopped in the middle of the very busy street was that she ran out of gas, the vehicle began shuttering, and the steering column locked up. While the first two make sense to me the last doesn't (in addition to passing two gas stations <500 meters back. Although the ford focus has a history of issues with the steering wheel locking, I've as of yet come across an instance of that being related to the fuel system. Has any one else?
  21. Ecoboost Issues

Hi haven't used any form of forum before but desparate to know how others finding ecoboost feature on Focus. I bought 2012 Focus Zetec last April (2013), and the Eco Stop/Start feature has worked say half a dozen times since purchase. Brought it back to dealer after about 6 weeks to have this looked into but told it was working OK in garage and must be way i drive (sadly, as a woman you have to expect that kind of fob-off when dealing with garages!!!). Still never worked for me and I raised it again when I had car serviced in Dec- and with same response. I drive 4-500 miles per week (so think I know how to drive!), mostly long work commute but have short journeys at weekends. Obviously we've had full range of temperaures and road conditions since April'13 but still eco-stop/Start feature has barely operated. What are others experiences?. Surely this feature should kick in regularly?. Annoyed at this stage both with the car, and dealer treatment
  22. HI new to this forum and wonder if anyone can help? :( Mondeo TDCi 56 plate 112k miles I know there is a lot out there about injectors but I am at my wits end!! Had all 4 injectors re conditioned by diesel injector 'expert' he said they all needed reconditioning (the car was knocking badly). I re-fitted the injectors and successfully primed the system and she started straight away (I have a good system to prime the filter and rail ...will pass on). However it runs ..but very 'lumpy' and lacks power, in fact I cant drive it. They are the original injectors which I marked and installed in their original positions. I have re coded them with an F Super paying attention to the firing order cylinder number arrangement, matching the numbers on the injectors and confirmed on the rocker cover. I have installed a refurbed turbo actuator a new EGR valve. I have 'cracked' the union nut on the top of the injectors to 'bleed' them several times. The re-furb company is well known and respected and insist they do not need new codes. I have also had a new clutch and DM fly wheel fitted so I need to get it going.. What can I do? Any help would be appreciated.. Thanks Neilmac
  23. Ok so I have had my Fiesta Zetec S since the 20th of March. Today on my way to work I broke down , after being towed to the dealership , I was told about a problem that they are having with the fuel pump. My car is the sixth one in the area to suffer from this problem. Has anyone else had or heard about this problem that has left me with a slow, shed on wheels of a courtesy car? I'm feeling very upset as I was also told that it may not be able to be fixed until the end of the month.
  24. Endless Reliability Issues

My 1.25 petrol car has 120,000 miles and is 9 years old so getting on a bit but in the 2 and 1/2 years I have owned it I have replaced.... From what I understand a lot of these are common issues -Driver side door moulding. -Driver side headlamp fitting. -Thermostat housing. -Ignition Coils and leads. -Front suspension coild spring( did other side as precaution too). -Front tyre due to fault ( admittedly not a ford issue) Does this seem particlarly high for my car, I do mainly motorway miles and don't exactly thrash the thing. I bough it with full FSH and do regular oil changes etc.. Maybe its time I bought something japanese, though it has been a great car for me otherwise.
  25. Hi, I am not sure if i am posting this in the right place or not. So feel free to move it if it is in the wrong place. I have been slowing loosing coolant and i think that i may have pin pointed the area where the coolant has been leaking from, with a little help. The car is a ford fiesta 2003 i have attached the picture (from google) in which i have circled where i believe that the coolant is leaking out of. My question is how do i go about repairing this or does anyone know where i am able to get a new pipe from Sorry i am a little bit clueless about cars so any help would be greatly appreciated thanks :)
