  1. Pressure In Coolant System

Hi all, I have recently brought a Ford Focus 1.8TDCi Duratorq 2008. When I came to check the coolant level in the system (cold engine) there was no coolant visible in the expansion tank. When removing the expansion tank cap, the system lets out pressure and the coolant floods back into the expansion bottle through the large hose located at the bottom of the tank. Surely when the engine is cold there should be no pressure in the coolant system? Thanks in advance!
  2. engine system fault

Hi all   i hope someone can help. i have a Ford C-Max, 2007 reg, 1.6 petrol engine. today the car has come up with a fault "engine system fault", then says "speed limited mode", and a red light is on. can anyone shed any light onto this please? from what I've read elsewhere this problem is quite serious and never seems to go away! need advice and help please.   thanks.
  3. Hello there, I hope not to get stoned for repeating questions as I am sure what I write here has been covered already. I have done my browsing on here and I think I have some of the answers but I would like to get the full picture so please bear with me. After a long period of driving Japanese I ended up having a 2005 Focus Estate with a 1.6 TI-VCT engine. I have had it for a good week now and as far as I can tell after about 500 miles I like it. When I bought it the coolant temperature guage was suspiciously steady at 60 C even after 15-20 miles. I think I should have thought of the obvious why the previous owner parted with it. I suspect my thermostat is stuck open or semi open. The tests I have done so far: Set the on-board computer to show the engine temperature ( I hope I am right saying this shows the cylinder head temperature) started the engine and put my hand on the radiator. Started with the radiator being cool and the temperature in it started to build up very quickly , although the engine temperature was only showing about 86-88 degree C. The coolant temperature gauge was still on 60 degree C. Then I spent another 20 mins sitting on 1500RPM (still on the drive) to get the engine temperature up to 120-125 degree C. At this point the coolant temperature guage had reached around 80 degree C. I carried on warming the engine to test if the fan was working as I had never heard it come on before. About 10 minutes later at around 142-143 degree C I finally could hear the sound so the fan was working. At this point the coolant gauge was just under 90 (ever so slightly before the middle mark) so I guess the gauge is not the most accurate as people here say the fan is set to come on around 100 C. I also took the car out for a drive a day later. I drove 20 miles to see what would happen under life like conditions with the computer set to show the engine temperature. I was doing a mixed drive, revving the cr@p out of it as well as go as slow as possible and the engine temperature just would not get over 80 degree C. I could only push it over when I rolled onto the drive and let the engine run for a few more minutes. The other thing I think my be a give away (I might be wrong) that from Peterborough to Birmingham and back with no traffic issues I could do near enough steady 65-70mph and the coolant guage would not move from 60 C and my mpg when I refilled the car worked out only to be 32-33mpg (around 8.8 l/ 100km). I would have expected more on a long run, given that the temperature was relatively mild at the weekend. The car pulls OK otherwise and does not judder or misfire. One strange thing I think is also worth mentioning that when I checked the engine temperature from home to work this morning upon turning the key to the second position whilst holding the trip computer button and selecting the engine temperature the starting temperature was about 43 degree C. I found it a bit odd as the car had not been driven since the evening before. I would have expected it to be around 10 C , same as the air temperature. Here are my questions: 1. Do you guys think it could be thermostat or is it something else? 2. Is it possible that my temperature sensors are not working or giving false reading? 3. Where is the coolant temperature sensor situated in my focus? 4.What temperature does the engine temperature sensor actually measures? Is it the cylinder head? 5. What is the usual operating temperature measured by the engine temperature sensor ? 6. At what temperature folks would you expect the thermostat to open and let coolant go to the radiator? 7. What is the temperature set point for the radiator fan? Is it 140 +/- 5 degree C of the engine temperature or is it the coolant at 90 -/+ 5 degree C? 8. Which temperature sensor feeds the ECU (PCM)? And would the ECU give the signal to the gauge on the dash or would it be a separare unit? Sorry for the lenghty post, I am new to cars although have been driving for 15 years but only just recently started to show interest in how they actually work. Thanks in advance! Pete
  4. I've have had this car since April and I'm more than happy with it's performance and general running. However the navigation system leaves a lot to be desired. It will not accept all post codes even if they are established addresses. It has taken me of route to avoid traffic hold ups only to turn me around a mile down the road and fetch me back to the original route. It would be nice to show all the roads in the area of travel, a leaf out of TomTom's book wouldn't go a miss.
  5. Hi, I got an engine system fault error pop up on the instrument cluster with the red light about 2 weeks ago and it went into limp mode. I took it to kwik fit and their bosch reader couldn't find any error codes. The error went away on its own and I was back out of limp mode. But the error is back! I now have an OBD cable and tried out forscan, it has picked up multiple DTC errors but I am unsure which one is causing the engine system fault (if any) and which faults are most severe, could someone have a look at the attached PDF and give me some advice? One thing that does look like it needs replacing is the battery? For extra info: Mileage: 100,000 miles EGR blanked Fuel and air filter at ~85k Oil change ~97k Euro 4 - DPF (according to ETIS) EDIT: removed attached codes as these are from the demo mode of forscan
  6. Hey, can anyone recommend which Induction kit/air filter to put on my mk6 fiesta zetec s, it has a full millek exhaust system on it, thanks

  8. Hi, New to the Ford world. quick one. Got an 08 Fiesta Zetec, Centre console shows Aux Button, but next to the cigarette socket it has a hollow. Any ideas why? Cheers. Aarron.
  9. Ford Focus 1.6tdci TDCI (with dpf) Got home tonight (over 1hr drive) and turned ignition off. Walked past car and cooling fan still on. Didn't think much of it - cooling down or dpf regen. 20mins later still on...a bit strange... never been on this long before. Fault code reader out and got P0691 low speed fan output circuit malfunction - short to ground. Disconnected battery as not fixing just now. Looked at my trusty (not!) haynes manual and it indictates that F15 in engine fusebox compartment should be a cooling fan relay BUT there isn't one in this location on the car. The notes on the fusebox cover also has a picture of a fan! Does anyone know if there is such a relay and where it is for a 2008 ford focus 1.6tdci
  10. Hi, I'm new here. I've just got my hands on a 2005 focus MK2. I have a few questions. My coolant temperature rarely make to middle middle. only seems to if I've been in a lot of traffic.I have done some research and it sounds like I need a new thermostat. I am unsure of its location or how to get to it. Guides and videos I have seen do not match my engine. My second question is my coolant overflow tank has two outputs, one is capped off, is this normal? My Engine Coolant Would this be the replacement part? http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Ford_Focus_1.6_2005/p/car-parts/car-cooling-parts-and-car-heating/cooling/car-thermostat/?209590191&1&5459c809bd6950cbb09bd6aaa5215a02f5899d7f&000325 Thanks in advance
  11. Hi, I have a problem with my 04 StreetKa in that the cooling fan comes on with the ignition and doesn't go of until 30 seconds or so after the car is switched off. So far I have changed the fan - No different - and the thermostat (housing unit) - no different. I understand if the air con is on the fan would be on all the time. Seems the button is not now working, but was off. Horn stopped working as well, so could be a relay problem, or a rad temp sensor, I just don't know. Lastly whilst under the car I noticed what looked like air con pipes right at the front of the car just dangling, which was/is a bit strange. I do hope the above makes some sense and welcome any help or advice.
  12. Exhaust System Change

If I bought an ST180 Cat Back exhaust system would it be a straight fit onto my fiesta Zetec S ecoboost 1L ???
  13. Plesae Help!!!!

Please help. have just got a Smax 2008 2.0 tdci. Found air con not working. Have found a break in the PWM wire feeding the fan and reset fault codes but air con is still not working. Have 14 v at fan, PWM unit cable 12 v when connected to the fan and 4.4v when disconnected. Really just want to prove the fan will come on when the engine is hot, have left the engine run for 30min but not much past the mid way point on temp gauge. as towing a caravan just want to make sure the fan will kick in when temp of engine gets too hot. Is there a way of testing/ disconnecting a sensor to get fan to start. Air con not that bothered about as have windows..... Please help Thanks
  14. Hi guys, I am having a problem identifying this A/C system part. Does anyone know the exact name?
  15. Hi, I' ve just purchased a Ford Focus Style 1.4 2006 plate. The car has 3 keys- 1 being central unlocking system remote. The car didn't unlock using the remote key so i put a new battery in the key fob- and its still not unlocking/locking the car. I have to use the key manually to unlock. Can anyone give me some advice? The engine starts etc and unlocks manually, i just cant unlock/lock car remotely Do i need a code to make this work again? Will the key be faulty? is there anywhere i can take it to be looked at? Thanks

  17. Long Warm Up Time.

Hi - I'm a novice when it comes to fixing cars so go easy :) I have a 2008 1.8 TDCi Diesel Focus Estate and last week I had a coolant leak; I found a hole in a pipe at the top and behind the engine which later I discovered was called the EGR Cooler Top Hose. I've since replaced the hose and drained the coolant from the radiator. When I refilled the coolant I had the heater blowing but couldn't find a bleed screen. The Haynes manual I have states that the 1.8 should have a bleed screw but I also read in a different forum that the 1.8 doesn't have a bleed screw. The car seems to be running fine but I'm concerned something isn't right. I get heat coming from the blower but the dashboard temp gauge takes a very long time to show any temperature. After a short period of time say 5 mins I get heat coming out of the blower, which seems right. But after 20 mins (5 miles in traffic), the temperate gauge on the dashboard barely reaches past the first quarter mark. But I'm sure before the coolant leak the gauge would reach the half way mark (normal) not long after starting my journey home. I've not gone on a long enough journey to see if the car reaches normal. I know this seems silly to ask but should I be concerned about the amount of time it takes to heat up. Could there be air in the system or could the leak have damages the sensor/thermostat? With heat coming out of the blower perhaps it's ok? I also appreciate that its quite cold on the UK at the moment; around 6 degrees. Thanks Chris
  18. Hello My Mum's 2005 Fiesta Ghia TDCi vehicular carriage has now seemingly developed a bigger problem... we bought it around 18 months ago from a dealer. On initial viewing of the car and test drive etc a noise seemingly from the engine cooling system wasn't heard, but after my Mum got the car a whooshing or whirring sort of noise could be heard more audibly.. I think it related to cooling/water pump. Tried with the warranty that was bought with the car (purchased from an independent dealer on his borrowed land in High Peak, Derbyshire) to get somewhere with this but none of the local garages that the warranty company named to take the carriage would really help much (I can't remember the name of the warranty company and don't have the car's paperwork to hand). So now just today my Mum reported some problem when moving the car... I went to look (engine bay looked normal) but when creeping the car forward some mechanical noises could be heard. I initially thought brakes/suspension etc so jacked the car up but couldn't really see anything abnormal... When the car was running I noticed more smoke than normal from the exhaust. I lowered the car from the jack and heard something jangle and fall to the ground... I photographed it and attached to this thread. Maybe someone could shed some light as to what has seemingly broken.... I hope it is now to do with the whirring noise (tensioners/water pump etc) so that this can now be fixed. I hope it isn't something else on top of the whirring noise that may still need fixing. I don't have the bills/invoices to hand so couldn't quite tell when the cam belt/water pump etc was last done. I think it may have been in 2010/11 but not sure if the water pump was done at the same time. Of course we will be getting the car recovered to a specialist asap, but any help / advice right now will be very much appreciated. Thanks
  19. Dvd Sat Nav System

Hi All, I am actually new in this forum. and also a new driver. my first car is ford focus which is old 2005 model. I want to upgrade my system so that built in sat nav, reverse camera, dvd, Bluetooth etc modern facility can get from the car. I know this is old and may be not a wise decision many can say, but as I want to run this car for next couple of years and I thought rather than buying a separate sat nav, why not buy a built in sat nav and others. btw, now I am confused which system I should buy and how they are reliable. I found Erisin ES1131F 7" HD touchscreen. Anybody have any idea about this system ? or any other better system for this car ? I will be very grateful, if you share your experience. thanks in advanced. Zaki

  21. 1998 Escort

Hello good people of FOC, This is my first post on your forums since I have just inherited my Granddad's 1998 Escort, I'm hoping that you guys will be able to assist me over the next year or two that I plan on owning this car :) I saved the poor car from meeting the scrap heap as my granddad managed to blow the head gasket and took it upon myself to fix it. After a few weekends of work I managed to get it all fixed and running again, but there is still a problem. The radiator fan isn't kicking in when the temp picks up, which is probably the cause of the blown gasket. I have found that the fan is still functional by shorting the wires to the fan switch and therefore blame the fan switch itself. Now, the switch looks new.. which means that it may not be a Ford part and therefore may not be rated to the correct temperature as the original switch. The switch is rated at 100-95°C for low fan speed and 110-105°C for high. I want to know what temperatures the switch is meant to operate on an original part. If there are any MK VII owners out there can you please help me out by checking yours? Should I buy a lower temp rating to help prevent overheating? Thanks in advance

  23. Andy, 2009 Focus 1.6 Tdci

cooling fan runs for 10 minutes after switching off ignition, has anyone else had this happen?, is it a fault or is it normal?
  24. On Saturday October 18th a light came on dashboard when I was driving a short distance and the air conditioning which was on did not work temporarily. It would not cool down, Then it started to work again. I looked at the engine with the motor running and it seemed there was a strange noise. A local mechanic tried to ocate problem using sensors, thinking it was an electrical fault. But he could not fix the problem. He thinks it is the cooling system. I called local Ford dealer (car is 2009 and out of warranty) who said over the phone, "that does not usually happen with Ford Fiestas". Anyway it is booked in. I am now worried that this is going to be something big and expensive to repair. Any thoughts? I am completely dependent on this car for work and drive 40 miles there and back a day. There is no alternative transport such as trains to get to my work. Rosie
  25. I have a 2003 (53 Plate) Ford Fusion 2. I want to remove my 4500 Radio/Entertainment System so that I can see what ports and cable attachments are at the rear - thus giving me the opportunity to use a radio to auxiliary converter. I've seen it done with cars older and of similar ages to mine, but I won't know what ports are accessible until I have a look at the back. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks, Cameron
