  1. 2.0 Tdci "surging"

My 2007 TCDI 2.0 Mondeo has done 130,000 miles & generally runs without a problem. However, on zero or a very light throttle it seems to surge ie seems to accelerate fractionally, then not, then on again etc. Pehaps 2 or 3 seconds between on & off if you see what I mean. It's just not as smooth as it used to be at very light throttle settings. It won't be a blocked DPF as I regularly drive a decent distance at high speed. I also take it to the red line (with a warm engine) every few weeks & get some smoke, which quickly clears. I did these things before I noticed the surging issue. Can anyone please give me some guidance here? Thanks Paul
  2. Hello there, I hope not to get stoned for repeating questions as I am sure what I write here has been covered already. I have done my browsing on here and I think I have some of the answers but I would like to get the full picture so please bear with me. After a long period of driving Japanese I ended up having a 2005 Focus Estate with a 1.6 TI-VCT engine. I have had it for a good week now and as far as I can tell after about 500 miles I like it. When I bought it the coolant temperature guage was suspiciously steady at 60 C even after 15-20 miles. I think I should have thought of the obvious why the previous owner parted with it. I suspect my thermostat is stuck open or semi open. The tests I have done so far: Set the on-board computer to show the engine temperature ( I hope I am right saying this shows the cylinder head temperature) started the engine and put my hand on the radiator. Started with the radiator being cool and the temperature in it started to build up very quickly , although the engine temperature was only showing about 86-88 degree C. The coolant temperature gauge was still on 60 degree C. Then I spent another 20 mins sitting on 1500RPM (still on the drive) to get the engine temperature up to 120-125 degree C. At this point the coolant temperature guage had reached around 80 degree C. I carried on warming the engine to test if the fan was working as I had never heard it come on before. About 10 minutes later at around 142-143 degree C I finally could hear the sound so the fan was working. At this point the coolant gauge was just under 90 (ever so slightly before the middle mark) so I guess the gauge is not the most accurate as people here say the fan is set to come on around 100 C. I also took the car out for a drive a day later. I drove 20 miles to see what would happen under life like conditions with the computer set to show the engine temperature. I was doing a mixed drive, revving the cr@p out of it as well as go as slow as possible and the engine temperature just would not get over 80 degree C. I could only push it over when I rolled onto the drive and let the engine run for a few more minutes. The other thing I think my be a give away (I might be wrong) that from Peterborough to Birmingham and back with no traffic issues I could do near enough steady 65-70mph and the coolant guage would not move from 60 C and my mpg when I refilled the car worked out only to be 32-33mpg (around 8.8 l/ 100km). I would have expected more on a long run, given that the temperature was relatively mild at the weekend. The car pulls OK otherwise and does not judder or misfire. One strange thing I think is also worth mentioning that when I checked the engine temperature from home to work this morning upon turning the key to the second position whilst holding the trip computer button and selecting the engine temperature the starting temperature was about 43 degree C. I found it a bit odd as the car had not been driven since the evening before. I would have expected it to be around 10 C , same as the air temperature. Here are my questions: 1. Do you guys think it could be thermostat or is it something else? 2. Is it possible that my temperature sensors are not working or giving false reading? 3. Where is the coolant temperature sensor situated in my focus? 4.What temperature does the engine temperature sensor actually measures? Is it the cylinder head? 5. What is the usual operating temperature measured by the engine temperature sensor ? 6. At what temperature folks would you expect the thermostat to open and let coolant go to the radiator? 7. What is the temperature set point for the radiator fan? Is it 140 +/- 5 degree C of the engine temperature or is it the coolant at 90 -/+ 5 degree C? 8. Which temperature sensor feeds the ECU (PCM)? And would the ECU give the signal to the gauge on the dash or would it be a separare unit? Sorry for the lenghty post, I am new to cars although have been driving for 15 years but only just recently started to show interest in how they actually work. Thanks in advance! Pete
  3. hiya im a new member as of today, im sorry if this is in the wrong section but i was wondering if anyone has got a cylinder head for the mondeo ive described in the title for sale? 2 inlet valves are bent on cylinder 2 and the head is warped so i cant find any decent excuse to refurb it. \if anyone has one layng around for sale please lt me know Cheers Bradley P.S. iirc the cylinder heads are the same for both 1.8 and 2.0 zetec lumps

  6. Hi I'm new to the forum so be nice lol, Just orderd my new red edition and will be picking it up on Monday/Tuesday!!!! Dealer told me it's the new "16" model and has drl's and new rear lights, along with a colour screen and a new net pocket!!(didn't get that one). Can anyone shed any light on this or even better have any pictures of the new changes? Cheers
  7. Hoping someone can help with this annoying issue. Recently, and more obviously when cold, I have been getting a jerky/juddering sensation in the car when idle. On startup, the revs sit for a second or so just under 1000, then drop a bit and then the juddering starts. The jumpyness goes when you give it a bit of right foot, say up to 1200-1500. It seems that often this will disappear after the car has warmed up/by the end of a journey, but sometimes it continues this throughout a journey and you notice it when sat at lights, junctions etc. There has also been a whining noise when accelerating though the low gears for the past few weeks. From reading around this could perhaps be the alternator or belt tensioner pulley. At night when idling the interior lights and headlights, as well as the backlights of the stereo, buttons etc will flicker. It had a new injector a few months ago which significantly reduced the rough idle from the compression loss etc. and a Terraclean 2 weeks ago.
  8. Hello , I have joined this club to ask for some help to find out what's wrong with my car . I bought a 55 plate 2.0l tdci 130 Mondeo about 7 months ago . It's a brilliant car but has caused me endless expense since owning it . I've now got to the point where no mechanic I talk to can figure out what's wrong with it . Within 3 weeks of having it the dmfw went , so I booked it in to be replaced , while it was there the changed the fly wheel , clutch , and some tensioner that was knackered too . When I collected the car I was pleasantly surprised that the engine was slightly quieter now. However it still does sound quite ropey . My main issue at the moment is when i start the car - cold or hot - it's takes 2 or 3 attempts to start , and when it eventually goes , it runs on 3 cylinders with the engine management light on , for about 10 seconds , then the light goes out , and the 4th cylinder comes into play !! Along with a nice plume of white smoke out the back . Also while driving it makes a horrible "pinking "sound occasionally . I've had the injectors reprogrammed to the ecu , and I've had it code read - there are no fault codes at all. I'm literally at my wits end and would really appreciate some advice.. Thank you
  9. Focus Mk3.5 No Drls

Hey, I have a new 2015 Focus Mk3.5 Zetec, only thing which I find a bit strange is why there are no day time running lights? I wasn't expecting LED ones, but like I have a 2014 Fiesta Zetec which has them using normal bulbs, and I have even seen them on all the Ford transit vans now. So I was expecting the Focus which is the latest newer model to definitely have them, seeing as virtually all new cars do now. Has anyone got any idea what Ford were thinking?? The Ford dealer did contact me to ask me what I thought of the car, this is like a courtesy call they must be forced to make by Ford. I told them I was a bit disappointed but they showed absolutely no interest. Anyways, apparently the optional original factory fitted LED headlights cost £237.31 each plus around £230 fitting and reprogramming. This is subject to the wiring being there. I got this info from another Ford garage parts department that were a lot more helpful. I don't think I can justify paying out for them now, I should have added them as part of the appearance pack that's available. However, I do feel pretty short changed when I see cheap smart cars, Vauxhalls, and white Transit vans driving round with them!
  10. Hello My other halves 1996 ford fiesta mk4 1.25 zetec manual gearbox is not running well. It starts fine, but when driven off it loses power and jumps about, especially when under load, this happens until the engine warms up then it gets better. So far I have changed the fuel filter, and tested the resistence in the plugs and HT leads, and they were fine. Would I be right in saying checking the MAF sensor and coil is next? Also if the coil needs to be replaced, on Euro car parts web site they do two coupling types, Din and Saw toothed, any idea which is which and will be fitted, im hoping the latter as it cheaper. Any advise would be welcomed. Thanks
  11. Hello, One of my cylinders isn't running right, I've used an ultrasonic tool to isolate the cylinder. Swapped the coil packs around and no change. Next I want to see how clean the plug is but I don't know what size socket I need. The exhaust is very sooty and if I let it idle for a while on my drive way all I can smell is unburnt petrol from the rear end. Could someone tell me what size socket I need for the spark plugs on at 1.0 ecoboost please? Thanks.
  12. Split Pipes

hi, can someone tell me which pipes are most common to split on 1.8 focus ,im getting rough revs and a 29.7mpg which is not good andf any tips to check for split ,other than just eyesight please
  13. Petrol Leak! Ughhh!

Hi guys, I took the car out for another 150 mile motorway trip, on return I popped into local Shell to fill up. Turning the engine off, I heard some weird noises, like spitting etc I noticed the temp gauge was normal. Anyway, that lasted for like 30 secs, I immediately put up the bonnet up but nothing was obvious, no steam etc. Anyway, I proceeded to fill up and went home to nap. Today, I got into the car and put the windows down because it was hot and I could smell petrol. I drove for about 5 mins and came back to notice there was a patch of petrol probably the size of a dinner plate on the drive way. I don't think a lot leaked out because the gauge was still above full. Anyway, got under the car to have a rudimental check, noticed the previous owner put a new fuel pump in so it cant be that. Umm..there isn't any obvious fuel leak source I can find. But the tank itself does look quite pitted and rusty on one side. Question is: Have I written this motor off? how expensive is it to replace the tank (assuming that's at fault) and if its fuel lines, can it be fixed near the region? OR does the whole lot need to be replaced? How expensive is all this? I hope its a cheap hose or something. Thanks
  14. Hi, Looking for some help. I have inherited my late fathers Ford Fiesta 1.25 zebec 1998 s Reg (Mk4 I think). It has been stood for about 2 yeas however I have decided to give it the attention it deserves. It has 42k on the clock and is in mint condition. I had a non start issue however found it to be a blown 10 amp fuel pump fuse located under the bonnet. I replaced it and it started first turn of the key. I drove it home from where it was being stored and it didn't run well, a bit chugging. I removed the battery and charged it. Again non start and a blown fuse. I located a grommet under the rear seat and gave the top of the fuel pump a gentle tap and it started up. I left it running to get it warmed up properly as it felt damp inside. I stopped after about 1 hour of idle and it refused to start again literally straight again. I left it for a couple of days and retried it, it started with a little persuasion, however it doesn't idle brilliant, more so when the A/C compressor kicks in. I left it running for ages today and it now won't re start. has anyone had issues with fuel pumps failing. I am thinking it may just be a pressure issue. thanks in advance. Paul

  16. Drl Help....please

Hi Lads, I've recently installed some rather bright running lights to the Focus....they look fantastic during the day, but are far too bright in the evening, even using a dimmer auto switch. So I have installed a switch so I can simply turn them on/off as and when. All is well at this point. So to try and take it to the next level. I wanted them to turn on with my footwell lights too (for when I unlock the car for example) So I attempted what I thought was a circuit but I am having issues with the lights staying on all of the time so I have had to disconnect them Does anyone have any ideas what I am doing wrong....I'd imagine I'm way off where I need to be
  17. Warmed the car for 10 minutes before setting off, everything was working on the dash, put it into reverse and reversed out of the drive into the street and then put the car into first, looked at the dash and everything was dead (the speedometer, rev counter, fuel and temperature gauges and the digital LCD mileometer- the whole lot- dead). Thought I stalled it, but the engine was on..so I bravely drove it back into the drive and took the bus. ;) Don't want to drive in snow and ice with no gauges thanks Has the snow killed it? I hope its a simple fuse.. Help. Please. Watch the YouTube video link in the title (the forum doesn't let me copy and paste the url or link it using the button) Thanks guys
  18. warmed the car up for 10 minutes, like every day...Reversed out of the drive, (everything was fine on start up and when I got into reverse)..so reversed into the street and about to go into first when I noticed that everything on the dash had died. I thought I stalled it, gave it some revs and the engine was on..so I was confused. It was a snowy start today, the colds murdered it..I hope its a cheap fix like a fuse. Help me out guys! :/ p.s. see the YouTube link on the title (wont let me copy and paste on here nor will it let me link it using the button) thanks guys

  20. Nolden Drl's And Sidelights

Hi, I have bought some Nolden Daytime running lights for my 2011 Focus. I am aware that one step needs to be skipped in the UK, as to not disable the sidelights when fitting otherwise it would fail an MOT. What I was wondering was, will the DRL's dim when the sidelights are turned on or just when dipped beams are on or will it need to be rewired slightly differently?
  21. Revs Hunting 2000-2500

In need of some help please My ford focus 2003 1.6 zetec SE has developed a problem. Started of last year in the winter when car suddenly woudnt start but after many atemps started eventually. But ever since revs have been hunting between 2000-2500. It also appears to have lost power in that band range. Also fuel consumption higher too as this was confirm when the car was close to failing emissions test as it had high reading. I have since replaced throttlebody and idle control sensor. Also the vacuum hose at the intake with a new one. Dont what to keep replacing stuff. Thats why i need help Btw idle is fine when cold or warm, the problem is band specific
  22. Sump Gasket

  23. Hi guys. I am considering installing some daytime running lights on my mk1 focus. I'm probably going to fix them behind the lower grill. I was just after some advice on good kit to buy. Lights Control unit Any thoughts? Rob
  24. Hi Does anyone know to to dim aftermarket DRL's lights whilst the sidelight or headlights are on? I have these lights : http://www.sw-tuning.de/LED-Tagfahrlicht-Module/Tagfahrlicht-fahrzeugspezifisch/Opel/Astra-H/LED-TFL-LED-NSW-Suzuki-Renault-Opel-Peugeot-Nissan-Ford-Dacia-Citroen-Jaguar::34004.html Thanks
  25. Hi everyone I have just bought a 2006 Focus 18 tdci sport at auction which I am seriously kicking myself for now. It sounds ok when I listened to it all be it quickly as it was just about to go to auction. When I got in and started it up it starts easily as expected but sounds quite rough. tick over seems pretty quiet once it settles but if you touch the throttle it seems like its running on 3 cylinders with a knocking noise every so often! It pulls well while driving but is rough and there is quite a bit of vibration which seems to be from the engine while driving. Ive not had chance to open the bonnet for a look yet as had to dash when I got home to collect my wife. Any ideas anyone? timing belt not in correct position? clutch? (DMF Clutch?) bottom end? or would a bottom end not affect the running like this? car has done 110,000 miles. Thanks for reading, any advise very welcome so I can decide what to do with it. :(
