I think if i remember right if you get underneath the car at the back of the engine where the belt comes down there is a pulley it goes round. It the has a 17mm or 19mm nut on it. Put a spanner on it and push towards the front of the car. Its !Removed! tight so be careful the spanner doesnt slip and hit you in the face...which is what happened to me first time i ever done one! You may need to link another spanner onto the end of the one your using to get the force to move it. Also once belt is off make sure you release the tensioner very slowly back to its original position....DONT LET IT FLING BACK ON ITS OWN!

Hope this helps

hi, guys!! thanks for your suggestions.

been to see a friend who is a mechanic!!

there is no tensioner!

the belts are "stretchy belts" which means you need a special tool which fits over the water pump and leads the belt over the pulley!!

hope this post will help someone else with simular prob in future?!!

my 2001 1.6 focus uses a stretch belt, but the tension can released by undoing the alternator bolts and pulling it forward slightly.

if you buy the belt from ford it comes with the tool, should do at £40!

I'm pretty sure mine was on a tensioner maybe it depended on engine codes etc worth checking as i'm sure some people prob end up buying the tool and don't need to! I also checked with my mate who is a ford and vauxhall specialist mechanic and he did say some have tensioners others have stretchy. One thing I will say is the tensioner just looks like a bearing and is !Removed! stiff to pull forward.
