Gearbox Failing?

Hi all, new here.

I have a 1991 Escort 1.8D van with 91k on clock.

It==The engine starts and runs fine and revs smoothly but when i turn it off there is a rattle from the gearbox area which is like 3 or so knocks (sounds like something is loose) There is also a small amount of noise coming from it as the cas is idling which dissapears when the clutch is depressed.

If i turn engine off with clutch depressed there is no knocking!

Is this the box or the release bearing? I have a feeling it the imput shaft bearings on way out
