Hi all iam thinking of doing my own oil and fliter change this week so iam just wondering is it staraight forward job just a few questions i need to ask before i go ahead.

I drive a fiesta 1.3i endure e engine petrol 2001 on a 51 plate so iam wondering does this engine use fully synthetic oil and if i rember writely its 5w-30. How many litres do i need for a oil change and how many litres does my car hold also were is the oil fliter located because ive had a look under the car and i can't seem to locate it lol also were is the oil draining plug located and what size tool do i need to undo the nut for the oil drain plug.

Ive also heared its simple to do a oil change and alot cheaper doing it yourself also do i need to put a new washer on the nut for when i screw it back in. sorry for all the questions what the best oil has well i mean i don't want to be paying through the roof for it. another question if i rest the car on axle stands while doing this the car wont be level will it because i want to make sure all the old oil is out.

Thank you in advance alan.

ok so, for the 1.3 you will need 3.25 litres of 5w/30, either part or fully synthetic.

you will need to do a bit of searching of the engine as im not sure where the filter is on this type.

3.25litres of 5w/30 oil

new sump plug (prefferably)

filter wrench

oil drain pan

some old rags or kitchen roll

newspaper (to cover the ground under the drain pan)

measuring jug or old 1ltr oil bottle

13mm spanner or socket

right, first of all start the car and let it run for 5-10 mins to allow the oil to heat up. the hotter you can get it without burning yourself the better as it will be thinner and pull more crap out with it.

the drain plug will be at the lowest point of the sump, i can remove the one on my focus without jacking the car up and thus means the car remains level. undo the drain plug very slowly, until you have your drain pan into the correct position and then remove it fully. make sure its not windy when you do it or you will end up with a right old mess as i have done a few times in the past.

leave the oil draining as long as you can at this point i always say, i usually leave it about 15 minutes to let all the drips out. while your waiting remove the oil filter, remember it will be full of oil so get it tipped into your drain pan as quick as you can and expect some to leak out from the engine.

smear a little new oil onto the o-ring of your new sump plug, clean any oil and dirt from the sump and then refit the plug. screw it as far as you can by hand and then nip it up with a spanner, if it leaks slightly you can always tighten it a little more.

same again with the oil filter, smear some new oil on the o-ring, clean the area where it screws on and then refit. do not tighten this using your filter wrench though, it should only be hand tight.

next you can pour about 3 litres of oil into the engine, let it sit for a minute and then start the engine until the oil pressure light goes out. once its gone out stop the engine and let the oil settle for a minute. check the level and top up if neccessary.

dont be alarmed if the oil light stays of for a few seconds, this is the oil filter filling up.

once you have topped up the oil, let the car run for a few minutes and check for leaks, if all is well put your tools away :)

im not sure exactly of the sump plug fitted to your car but alot of fords have a rubber o-ring and a 13mm hex.

they can be had for a couple of quid, i notice Halfords now sell them. you dont need to replace it, i have used mine the last 3 services now and its not leaked at all.

i would also recommend you wear gloves to do this job as its pretty horrible stuff.

this is the type fitted to most fords

Do you know the torque setting to tighten up the oil pan nut or does it matter shall i just tighten it untill it tight enough. So once once the nut is back in place togetther with its new washer i poor 3 litres of oil into the engine and if needed so top it up. sounds easy enough like what is the best oil without paying through the noise for it.

there probably is a correct torque setting for the plug but ive never bothered and ive done a few oil changes lol. yeah basically screw it in then just nip it up until it feels tight, dont go swinging on it though.

put the plug back in an filter on (remember to smear some clean oil on the o-rings) and then pour your oil in, start the engine until the oil light goes out (takes a few seconds) then turn off the engine and let the oil settle. i will double check that your oil capacity is 3.25 litres but i got that figure from autodata so i will assume for now its correct.

might be worth checking out oil prices at you local motor factors, they might do 4 litres for £20 or there about.

i buy mine in 25ltr drums now, only costs £65 for 5w/30 fully synthetic. the stuff i buy is Q8 oil, i think its a brilliant oil and very cheap. i do my oil every 6k miles too, i dont believe in long intervals and at £2.60 a litre why would i risk it.

this is the stuff i buy, as they are just down the road from me i can save the postage too

I think it is a hex for the sump plug if its the right one i can get to it without jacking the car up by looking at the pic on eBay does look like the one ive been looking at. i think all i will be replaceing is the washer not the whole plug.

i dont think you can get the rubber washer for these plugs seperately, ive never seen them.

Cheers so its just a smear of oil in the fliter i don't have to fill it up a little do i you say i need to double check on how many litres of oil my car takes will the likes of Halfords or anywere tell me that cheers.

yeah just smear some on the rubber o-ring on the top to help make it seal better against the engine. i never fill my oil filters first, on some cars its not even possible as the filter sits on it its side. it wont really make much difference, as long as you know when you have put 3 litres into the filter/engine.

the Castrol website has a bit where you can put your car details in and it will come up with recommended oil and capacity etc.

yeah, you cannot miss it when you look at the filter.

personally i would never use oil that cheap, for a few quid more i would go for something a bit more tried and trusted.

is it the stuff at £14 for 5ltrs your looking at? changed more often it will probably be as good as

http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Ford_Fiesta_1.3_2001/p/Car-Parts/Service-Parts/Regular-Service/Oil-Filters/?501590020&1&87747c1f96ff911c9df8ebf39d49fc03a805f03c&OILF

as you can see the black o-ring is quite hard to miss.

i dare say it will meet all the standards in order to sell on the shelf as whatever the label says, but im sure ive used it in the past also. cant say ive heard or know anything bad about it B)

some people say there is no point in spending money on top class oils, changing the oil regularly is what counts and to a certain extent i do agree.

Ive priced Castrol and they are pricey they meet all of fords standars but i don't want to be paying out loads on all the gear when i can get a oil and fliter change done for £30 LOL.

check out the eurocarparts website, they do 5 litres of 5w/30 an oil filter for your car at a very good price i would say. i think they might be free delivery too

other than that all you need is a drain pan, even a 5litre bottle with the side cut off will do and a filter wrench.

£16.76 you can have the oil and filter at your door for :)

i would give that oil at £14 for 5litres a go, you should be able to pick a filter up for about £4.

For 5 litres for £14 thats a bargin when ive had oil changes done in the past and ive gone to check my oil to see if its needs topping up not once have i had to top it up lol ive had a bottle of oil for about 2 years nearly lol another thing i would like to point outside my house it not exsacliy level but not on a big slope if you get what i mean does this matter it is level but when i take my foot of the brake my car does roll back a tiny bit but not that much.
