if the tensioner had gone ford advise replacing pully as well

FORD TSB

Should a customer express concern about a drumming noise from the accessory drive belt with the engine at idle, the probable cause is a high accessory drive belt excitation caused by crankshaft vibration being transmitted into the accessory drive belt drive. The drumming noise only occurs during idle and should disappear at engine speeds above 1000 rpm.

To rectify this concern a revised crankshaft

pulley together with a new accessory drive belt and accessory drive belt tensioner MUST be installed, without exception. The reason for replacing the accessory drive belt and the accessory drive belt tensioner is because they will both deteriorate after prolonged exposure to belt flap.

thats why they are usually sold as a complete kit

how can u locate this noise. sorry to be a bit stupid but this is my first diesal and its perfect but for the diesal noise which i still cant get used to. i did notice that a ford dealer put anew belt tensioner on the car back in 2008. and it does sound a bit louder on idle than my inlaws freelander diesal. i have put it down to duratorque having a chain rather than a belt though.

lol got a point mate....you sed u have a dura-torq wont be long till u need a clutch/flywheel/main tens pully and a crankshaft pully not matter how u drive it its common on the dura-torq tdci...thats what i have been told anyway i would never have a ford...im a vauxhall man...its my brother in laws mondeo not mine lol and for the diesal sound i no there loud but theres a noise i can hear it...just need a good set of ear holes

I have exactly the same noise mate, mine a 2004 TDCi 130bhp 68k,

I changed the belt and tensioner pulley which might have quitened it but its still there more to the side of the air con pulley...?

I have also had people say 'ar its a diesel they do that'... But being my 6th diesel car 3 vauxhalls and 2 peugeots and 1 escort td, i havent herad them make noise like this and half of them was chain driven and other half belt....!

Let me know if the famous crank shaft pulley (a.k.a dampaner pulley)cures this problem or its another waste of money like the tensioner.....

so , from what u say if i turn the aircon off and the engine gets quieter on idle its the aircon pulley?

Probably not belt related if the noise stops when the clutch is down. Could be DMF on it's way out :(

Mine doesnt make any difference to the noise - clutch in - clutch out, lights on/off, air con on/off....etc etc...

Driving me mad as said before changed the belt and tensioner pulley, its noisier near the air con pulley but its hard to pin point with the engine noise aswell.

What is the difference in a modified crankshaft pulley anyone have pics of the 2, and do these crankshaft pulleys have a bearing system inside? one bloke reffered to them as a dampener pulley...?

DRIVING ME MAD.....Ahhhhh

it wont be long before its up for sale l.o.l....

Mine also does this with the aircon on, stops once its switched off though.

However there is a constant noise that switched on and off regularly as if its charging an accumulator or something.

Its due a service soon anyway so I guess i'd better check the balts and tensioners, will do that whilst rebuilding the front end (see my other post :( )

  • 1 month later...

Had this problem -Knocking noise - with air con on - that went away when off - so took to ford "specialist" who changed the tensioner pulley ONLY. Rubber bush was knackered in pulley assembly

Cured the on / off noise but.... from what I read here they "should" have changed crank shaft pulley also - while they were there...

now it has recently developed a " phat phat" noise at low revs / high load - blowing exhaust??

there is a very common problem with the crank pulley which worsens when the engines under load, eg. aircon on. its two metal parts joined together by rubber, i dont know what difference this makes. but ford replace the tensioner, belt and crank pulley all at once as the wobbling from the pulley damages the belt and tensioner. i'd replace the pulley anyway.

I've noticed mine getting noisier at low revs but thought it was just 'diesel clatter'. I changed the tensioner pulley and belt about 6k miles ago as it was driving me nuts at idle. I noticed most duratorqs sound the same. When I changed the pulley and belt I had a 'mare' getting the tensioner off. Do Ford use a special tool with 1/2'' drive for this? The manual says use a 1/2'' drive to back off the tensioner but there's no room between the chassis/body and tensioner to get one in?? I would change the bottom pulley but it's too difficult to get the tension off to remove the belt. :(

i cant remember if its the 2.0 duratorq that has a special tool. i'll find out tomorrow.

Definitely seems like you need to replace all doing this job. Took mine to garage and they changed tensioner pulley only - declared crank pulley ok. Now 5k down the road I am getting belt slap - vibration / noise at tick-over and you can see the crank wobbling and see the belt flapping.

So need to disassemble again to renew crank pulley - Thanks "Ford Specialist " garage

Where's best to buy crank pulley??

if its a ford garage that did it they should have done it to the tsb, and replaced the lot. doesnt sound like a very good garage. you'd best buy from ford.

anyway, a special tool is required to slacken the tensioner.

changed the crankshaft pulley today. Easier than I thought. I ground down a 1/2'' drive to get to the tensioner.( therefore didn't have to lower the engine) I slackened the 3 bolts on the pulley first. Got someone to put their foot on the brake whilst the car in 3rd gear - they were very tight. Slackened off the tensioner and removed the bolts; pulley off. (I had replaced the belt and tensioner only 3000 miles ago so didn't change them again). Replaced the pulley wheel whilst the drive on the tensioner was tied back to the driveshaft. Got someone to stand on the brake pedal whilst torquing up the bolts. job done. No more clackety clack whilst driving at low revs:-))

Got the pulley wheel from Europarts (£90 delivered), bargain.

yep mine done too... no more hunting clatter at tick-over

Still noisy though!!! Normal cacophony + Sounds like a blown exhaust( but isn't = had it checked - Kind of a phat phat noise - any ideas - going to drive me mad this car - grunt and economy still good and love the drive - soft but handles well

Hi,

My Mondeo also has this noise problem and only started a week or so ago.

The noise sounds like an old diesel double decker bus when on low revs and tick over.

When you give it some revs, it goes away.

When the car is cold the noise isn’t too bad, but as it warms up it get worst again.

The noise is also worst when the air con is on or when the air blower is on high fan speed.

Now I don’t like this noise, but I’m skint, therefore my question to you all is;

  1. if I leave it alone will I be damaging my car?
  2. Also what is an average price to sort this out?
  3. And how easy a job is it to do yourself, as my car knowledge is very limited.

2002 2.0l TDCi

Thanks Al.

sounds like (!!) the tensioner pulley and or crank - classic symptom = noisier when air con is on.

ok to leave - just put up with noise - mind you if bushes are / have failed I suppose eventually something will break!! but not urgent
