The engine fan on my 2006 1.6TDCi can stay on for anything up to 2 minutes after the engine has been turned off.

Is this normal?

Not totally sure, 30 seconds yes but 2 minutes seems a little to long, does this happen everytime?. It might be worth speaking to someone at ford you can usually just phone up your local dealership and ask to speak to a mechanic quickly or just drop in and ask at the parts counter.

No Karl, not every time. Its only after a "warm" run (ie after being in comparatively slow traffic, or perhaps on a particularly warm day)

Other occasions, it doesnt come on at all. The engine always seems to run at a normal temp according to the gauge, (just below half way), but its obviously kicking in due to the "warmer" run

well on every diesel ive had normal temp is always in the middle of the gauge not to the left or right but bang in the middle and since diesels run cooler than petrols i can only say ive never had a diesel fan come on for me even after a long drive also the gauge should sit in the middle so it could be possible the gauge is reading faulty ide check the rad is hot from top to bottom that all the hoses are warm and the heaters giving hot air ide also check for oil in the coolant and gunge under the oil filler cap just incase it could well be normal but ive never had it happen personally on any diesel check the temp on the dash trick rather than the gauge and see what it reads

Sure this is normal, my dad's old fiesta flame used to do this not every time but fan would come on for a couple of mins after switch off, and go off after 2-3 mins, there was at least 3-4 occassions this happended to him, first caught him out and he wondered what was up, but think ford say it's standard practice to do this.

thanks for the replies so far fellas.

I'm pretty sure the temp gauge is working properly. If it was faulty then surely it wouldnt give the cold reading at startup and get progressively warmer. And its only JUST under the halfway mark anyway. And it seems to respond properly in the "dashboard secret trick" sticky

I not got any gunge on the oil cap, so I think its running as it should with respect to heater/water/coolant etc. but I'll still do the hose/rad checks that you suggested Art.

it could very well be normal if ive found one thing out all the diesels are different some of these new pugeot with the regen thing will switch the fan on after shut down to cool the regeneration thing down if all is okay it sounds like its working normally

Mine does it even in cold (freezing) weather sometimes. I checked with Ford. Normal. Apparently it designed to do it under certain conditions as a technique for stopping it freezing up...

I have a faulty temp gauge which reads in the red from time to time and the best way to have peace of mind is to buy one of those infrared temp guns off eBay (they are cheap), like I did. The engine when the gauge was in the red was at the correct temp and the fan was cutting in and out when it should, so I have less stress now thanks to the temp gun.

I have exact same model and year as yours. Everything you have stated is perfectly normal for our car. The temp gauge should be slighlty below middle for a perfect reading. I came home from work today(4.5 mile journey) and my fan came on for several mins also. Perfectly normal for yours and my car.

Sleep well now ok. ;)

Got Ford Galaxy Titanium 2011. Fan constantly running. Dianosed to be relay. But have been told the whole fan assembly has to replaced at a cost of £700 plus labour plus VAT. Is this correct? Or can relay which is attached to the fan unit be replaced on its own?

If its a fan and module assembly like the picture below they are not cheap eurocarparts do them with heavy online discounts about £260 before you use the codes but there are 2 types for that year.

The box of tricks on it can be doggy as they have constant power and rely on a signal cable with a pulsed voltage to tell it what speed to turn and when to be on, its known as the purple/blue wire they can corroded and cause cause problems coming out of the pcm box but that normally means they dont turn on at all.

Without looking more into it i would say either the temp switch is a bit iffy and telling the car it excessively hot when its not or the pcm maybe having issue not sure fan replacement would fix the problem.

Drove my focus 1.6 diesel on a 14 plate home from today 3 miles when I stopped the car the coolent fan was on first time it's done this taken it to garage and he said it's thomostat housing that needs replacing ? I've been reading up on focus pages and they said it's sometimes normal as it something to do with the dpf regeneration progress due to not warming to clear silt  any advice ?

Just had a Ford service and the refrigerant gas replenished. But then the cooling fan kept running for ages after switching off the engine. Ford said this is normal. Then as the weather turned cold I found that I couldnt get any hot air into the cabin. Ford service receptionists were baffled and told me to bring it in. However, I thought I would just check under the bonnet myself to see if any wires or connectors had been left loose after the service, which might be the cause the problem. Then I noticed that the radiator coolant level was low (note: temp gauge inside the car was reading normal suggesting everything ok). So I topped up the water/antifreeze level. Now everything ok. Air conditioning gives hot or cold air as required and the fan has stopped running when the engine is switched off. Problem sorted! But why didnt Ford check this on their annual service and why dont the receptionists have some knowledge of common complaints?

I have a 2012 Ford Focus in which the fan has started staying on for 30 or 40 seconds but not every time. It’s very intermittent.

Also, even more bafflingly the fan will sometimes start up just when I open the door! Is this normal?

It will happen the odd time for a few days and then won’t happen for a week.

i have taken it to two different garages. The first garage added some water to the coolant. The fan stopped coming on for a few days but then started doing this again so I took it to another garage. They changed a part but again after a few days the fan would sometimes start up just when I open the door, even if the car had been stationary for up to an hour.

can anybody suggest anything? Does this sound normal? Thanks

Andrew McKeever
