hi everyone,changing engine on a 1.6,haynes says engine and box are to be removed as one unit,lowered down and taken out from under the car.does anyone know if it is possible to remove engine only upwards.thanks for any help.

this may be the longest post ever this is the proceedur for the 2.0lt, 1.6 roughley the same. here we go

NOTE: Mark the hinge-to hood placement to ease alignment when installing the hood.

Remove the hood.

Disconnect the windshield washer hose and clips.

Remove the four retainers(two each side) and remove the hood.

WARNING: Escaping fuel. Observe the safety regulations for working with fuel. Failure to do so may result in personal injury.

Disconnect the fuel line spring lock couplings.

Remove the battery tray.

Disconnect the crankcase breather hose.

Remove the air cleaner (ACL) housing.

Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.

Remove the intake hose.

Remove the air cleaner housing from the rubber bushing.

Remove the air cleaner intake pipe.

CAUTION: To prevent the risk of scalding, place a thick cloth over the filler cap before opening the cooling circuit. Failure to do so may result in personal injury.

Open the coolant expansion tank.

WARNING: Danger of scalding if the engine is warm. Failure to do so may result in personal injury.

Drain the coolant

Screw the drain plug back in after draining.

Remove the accelerator cable.

Unhook the cable.

Pull off the plastic clip and lay the accelerator cable to one side.

Remove the speed control cable (if equipped).

Unhook the cable.

Pull off the plastic clip and lay the accelerator cable to one side.

Disconnect the cable from the generator.

Disconnect the electrical connectors.

Power steering pump pressure switch.

Generator.

Heated oxygen sensor (HO2S).

Disconnect both powertrain control module (PCM) connectors.

Detach the vacuum hoses.

Evaporative emission (EVAP).

Brake servo.

Delta Pressure Feedback Electronic (DPFE) system sensor.

EGR-valve and EGR vacuum regulator solenoid.

Detach the vacuum hose from the evaporative canister purge valve.

Remove the coolant expansion tank. For additional information,

Remove the PAS reservoir and lay it to one side.

Position aside the accessory drive belt.

Rotate the tensioner clockwise and remove the belt from the power steering pulley.

NOTE: Using the special tool to prevent the power steering pump pulley from rotating remove the power steering pump pulley nut.

Remove the power steering pump pulley.

Remove the power steering pump and position it to one side.

Detach the coolant hose from the intake manifold.

Detach the coolant hose from the water pump.

Detach the coolant hose from the thermostat housing.

Remove the upper starter motor bolts.

Disconnect the cooling fan motor electrical connectors.

Remove the pin-type retainers.

Remove the catalytic converter. For additional information,

Disconnect the lower harness retainers.

CAUTION: Do not use excessive force to release the cooling fan shroud.

Remove the cooling fan shroud.

Release the top clips of the radiator to allow the cooling fan motor and shroud to be raised.

Remove the fan and shroud.

Remove the drive belt cover.

Remove the drive belt.

Vehicles with air conditioning

Detach the air conditioning compressor and tie it up on the radiator crossmember.

All vehicles

Remove the generator (engine removed shown).

Detach the coolant hose from the coolant pipe.

Remove the coolant pipe bolt.

Remove the bolt and tube.

Remove the accessory drive bracket (engine removed shown).

Remove the transaxle lower flange bolts and catalytic converter bracket.

Remove the torque converter cover bolts.

Disconnect the torque converter from the engine drive plate (four nuts).

Rotate the flywheel to access all bolts.

Remove nuts, bolts and bracket.

Detach connector pin-type retainer.

Remove the retaining clip.

Remove the intermediate shaft bracket.

Disconnect the starter motor electrical connectors (two nuts).

Remove the starter motor.

Remove the starter motor bolt.

Remove the crankshaft pulley.

Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.

Remove the left-hand transaxle flange bolts.

Remove the right-hand transaxle flange bolt.

Lower the vehicle.

CAUTION: Insert a wooden block between jack and transaxle.

Support the transaxle with a jack.

Install left and right side lifting brackets.

Using the special tool, install suitable floor crane.

Raise the engine slightly to prevent pressure on the support insulators.

Remove the engine front mounting.

Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.

Remove the upper transaxle flange bolts.

Separate the engine from the transaxle and remove it out the top

Whew! That was a long detailed tutorial. I try attempting this stuff but I am having my hard time removing my air cleaner housing from the rubber bushing. Eventually I gave up. Thanks, anyway!

thanks for all your help,it can come out the top if you remove water pump first.

Thanks for the writers, mintalkin.   I was just given a 2003 Focus wagon that the timing belt blew apart in.   I was told that the engine needed to be replaced as the belt damaged the engine.   Not sure how true that is but tearing into the engine will let me know.   Worse case, yank the engine and replace.
