Polish

Hi Guys - I have a black 2008 Titanium TDI - Thinking about giving it a bit of a polish.

Been to Halfords and am a bit bemused - some products are up near the £30.00 price range.

Can anyone recommend a good polish.

have a look at the poorboys range the blue polish,black hole glaze and nattys blue wax will cost about £35.00 for all 3 products works great on black,try www.cleanyourcar.co.uk

I think Halfords are currently doing a two for one or buy two get one free type thing. I would suggest you go for something like Meguiar's NXT range, wax, shampoo and a bottle of speed detailer.

The shampoo is great, the speed detailer helps remove flies etc and the wax is good easy to apply and leaves a great shine. B)

Wipe it all off, then do it again, but this time wipe-on, wipe-off per panel.

SRP contains fillers that will also reduce the appearance of swirl marks.

After polishing, remember to seal with a good wax or sealant to preserve+protect the paintwork.

I recommend Autoglym Super Resin Polish. I use and only use Autoglym products on my car and get a great finish every time. Real easy to use too.

Polish for what purpose?

If you're looking to improve the shine on the paint, you're not really looking to polish.

If you're looking to improve the feel of the paint, you're not really looking at polish.

If you're looking to touch up very minor paint imperfections - then yes, polish.

The Halfords BOGOF is indeed in full swing, and so let's keep this discussion to the products available there just to save some pennies (I emptied my local branch of several products earlier today )

Autoglym Super Resin Polish is indeed a fine product, so I would say get hold of some of that. This is a true polish - lots of fillers and a little 'cut' to help mask fine scratches.

If you're looking to protect, get some Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection. This is a good quality synthetic sealant which is a doddle to apply and has very good results.

If you're looking to really get the look - and on black this is always tempting - then invest in some Autoglym High Definition Wax. At £20-£30 a pot before the BOGOF it's pricey, but worth it. This will really bring on the shine, and also protect the finish.

If you're after speed and ease - try some Autoglym Ultra Deep Shine. This is the sort of all in one protection product - but I don't rate it anywhere nearly as high as the other AG products.

For speed there's also Aquaxwax, which is ok and has its place - but I find it better for topping up existing protection rather than creating new protection.

I've today purchased some Megs NXT spray wax to try as a top up wax, so will report back on that in due course.

A wax wont make the paintwork shine.

A good wash, claybar and polish will bring out the best colour and shine for your car.

However, your paintwork will not be protected if left like this, hence the wax (or synthetic sealant)

If anything, applying wax will SLIGHTLY DEADEN the shine, but at least all your hard work is now being protected from the elements and crap on the roads.

A distinction needs to be made here between machine and hand polishing. Based on the original post, we're talking about hand polishing. Hand polishing with something like SRP isn't going to see much change in the shine of the paint - but may correct/fill very minor imperfections such as marring and very light scratches.

If you want real shine, then yes - wash, clay, machine polish, IPA wipedown, prime/cleaner wax, wax - now that's bling.

All you need is autoglym shampoo to wash the car then rinse and leather off then ICE it, turtle wax ice i think it is a brilliant product and my car looks like it`s from a show room when i do it

Another disagreement from me I'm afraid...

Autoglym shampoo is ok, but there are far better products out there - it's not their best product by a long shot.

As for leather - that's an outdated tool that can do a considerable amount of damage (considerable to someone who takes as much care as I do on my paint that is).

The Turtle Wax ICE range I have no experience of, and it is stocked by Halfords. It's had some ok reviews on detailing World.

Been to Halfords today and bought AutoGlym Super Resin Polish and Autoglym Interior Shampoo, Just used the interior and its brilliant (Smells like a showroom motor). Will give the Polish a go when I can be bothered and report back. (Black Focus)
