Focus Dashboard Secret (Trick)

Have tried this on my recently installed trip computer on my Focus 1.8 TDCi 53 reg using various timed combinations of holding the reset button and starting the engine, but I get nothing! :(

Can anyone also tell me how to get the trip computer into calibration mode for mpg? I have tried holding the INFO button in while starting the engine (as suggested on other forums) and all I get is 'On' displayed on trip computer LCD, which I can toggle to 'Off' by pressing the setting button.

Anyone know what the 'On' and 'Off' refer to exactly on the trip computer?

Thanks :blink:

Hello all ,

I have found some info out a few months ago about my focus i got it off a ST170 SITE so credit does go to them but i will say it here anyways

*******WARNING DO NOT TRY THIS IF YOU LIKE TO KEEP A CHECK ON MILEAGE AFTER EVERY REFILL LIKE ME AS THIS WILL RESET THE TRIP METER******************

1.GET IN FOCUS

2.PUT KEY IN STEERING LOCK OFF

3.HOLD DOWN TRIP RESET BUTTON ON INSTRUMENT PANEL

4.TURN IGNITION ON AND START ENGINE

5.NOW YOUR CAR IS IN SELF DIAGNOSTIC MODE

YOU CAN NOW CHECK IF THE CAR HAS ANY DTC CODES IN THE MEMORY ,CHECK ALL GUAGES ,CHECK ALL INSTRUMENTAL PANEL LAMPS EVEN ONES U DONT USE E.G. ABS GLOW PLUG LIGHT ON PETROL AND AUTO GEARBOX LAMP YOU CAN ALSO SEE YOUR REV METER IN DIGITAL

Give this a go its quite cool and also dtc codes are usefull if you know what to do with them try googling dtc library there used to be a program you could get but i dont know if its avaliable anymore

Thanks

Matt :D

IT DOES WORK, IVE HAD 2 FOCUS'S FOR YEARS AND THEY HAVE BOTH WORKED FOR YEARS! :lol:

Nice little trick there, thanks.

2 things ?

On my LED Test, the Frost light(*) flashes from amber to red while the others stay stable. Is this right ?

and

i have 1 DTC Code - D900, any ideas what this is or is related to please.

Thanks

matt b

just done it on my st170 and its works a treat, although ium not gettin no dtc codes i am getting 2 codes, well i think they are codes coming up before it goes to dtc and they are R22 and E001 does anyone know what these mean

first page last post, same question...I would not worry about it, sometimes to much information gets you worried for no reason......it's like having access to an Enigma machine without having the relevant code book to hand

hopefully your car isnt still running like this but I would have guessed that its in limp home mode, and you need/ed a mechanic to take a look at it!

Hi,

This trick can be found on www.fordst170.co.uk and it does work:

Self Diagnostics Mode

The Self Diagnostics Mode gives you in-depth information about your engine and the actual numbers in digital. To use it, follow the steps:

* Insert Key but do not turn it on

* Press and hold the Trip Meter Reset Button

* While holding the reset button, start your car and continue holding the button

* Within 10 seconds, the display should change to "test" in LCD font and the needles will do a full sweeping. Release the Button

Pressing the button will now cycle through some 17 different modes

* 1.Shows a Gauge Sweep

* 2. Shows all 8's on the LCD (LCD TEST)

* 3. Illuminates all the bulbs on the dash

* 4. Displays hexadecimal value for ROM level

* 5. Displays the hexadecimal value for EE level

* 6. Shows DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code)

* 7. Digital Speedometer - mph

* 8. Digital Speedometer - kph

* 9. N/A

* 10. Digital tachometer

* 11.Fuel volume

* 12. Engine coolant temperature

* 13. battery voltage

* 14. ABS fail

* 15. Electronic brake distribution (EBD) failure

* 16. Illumination

* 17. Crank Sense

The listing of the DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) from Number 6 above can be found on the DTC Codes page to view the list of codes and its meanings of it.

List of DTC codes can be found here as well: http://www.fordst170.co.uk/dtc-codes.php

Self-Diagnostic Mode - Instrument Cluster

1. To enter the instrument cluster self-diagnostic mode simultaneously depress and hold the tripmeter reset button then turn the ignition switch to position II or III.

2. Release the tripmeter reset button when TEST is displayed on the LCD. This will take between 5 and 8 seconds.

3. The instrument cluster will enter the gauge sweep test.

4. To navigate to the following tests while in self-diagnostic mode depress the RESET button to move to the next test.

5. The self-test is deactivated when the ignition is turned to the OFF position.

Note:

Additional tests are available after number #.16 but are not useful for diagnostics.

Note:

Later vehicles had a "cost reduced" cluster that had a different Engineering Test Mode layout. These came in about 03-53 reg, and can be distinguished by only the symbol lighting up in the tell tale rather than the whole lot. (LEDs rather than bulbs).

These clusters used stepper motors for the gauges rather than the air cored ones and did not have a Gauge Sweep test?

I tried this on mine.

It returned a DTC code of 9601.

Seems this means:

B1600 9600 PATS Ignition Key Transponder Signal is Not Received - Damaged Key or Non -PATS Key

I had a spare key made up (only 1 key when I bought it) so its probably got something to do with that. Strange tho how the key works 100% ok.

Heres a useful link of more codes in case anyone is interested.

Hi all,

Do you reckon it would help me.My fuel and temp gauge are not reading prperly. When I switch the engine off the needles shoot up to half way. Have just fueled up and the gauge does register the fuel amount.But still stayed half way when the engine is off. I'm new to cars with computers in them as I've always had old bangers this is the newest car I've ever had so I'm natually apprehensive about messing with the computer. I have a 2002 1.6l lx focus.

Hi, when you say checks smoothness of gauges what does that actually mean.Only my temp and fuel gauges are playing up .When the engine is switched of the needles shoot up to half way.The fuel gauge appears to be working otherwise,as I've just fueled up and the needle registed the ampount I put in.I read on here that its the norm for ford cars so am not sure what to do now.I'm not mechanically minded nor is my husband.

Thanks

cool trick, got one dtc code 9601.. wasnt happy... turned out to be something to do with an unprogrammed key in the ignition, think its the missus using the spare key when im at work. not bad though handy if you do suspect a problem.

just to ask a while ago my focus came up with 'engine system fault' which the garage sorted out, but would i have been able to find out the fault through this self test process? what does the garages diagnostics computer tell them other than fault codes? my old vectra has the same sort of thing, got code changed abs pump and that was that.... is there really any need to pay for diagnostics?

thanks - dean
