hey there the missus car focus 2003 1.4 lx has been acting up , i replaced the coil pack about 2 months ago, now it has developed another coil like symptom , when driving along and having to slow down a bit , when you accelerate again the engine coughs and splutters until the revs rise only happens for a couple of seconds really annoying in town as you have to keep dipping the clutch , any help appreciated thanks

was it a genuine coil pack with ford leads or a cheap coil pack with cheap leads the reason i ask is the cheap ones are so bad they can fail almost instantly especially the leads and coil

a false economy mate the cheap ones are crap casuing bad misfires right from the start the ford plugs are in our cash 64 quid yiou wont get genuine ones any cheaper than that as for the coil pack these are genuine and good priced http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/COIL-PACK-IGNITION-Focus-Mondeo-fiesta-OE-FORD-not-COPY-/390059606545?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5ad15d4211

i've checked the coil pack secondary res. between cyl 1 and 4 is 10.5 k ohms and between 2 and 3 its 10.7 k ohms , primary res. bet 1 and 2 its 1.1 ohms and bet 2 and 3 its 1.2 ohms could they still be duff? also the revs rise and fall from 450 to 900 rpm at idle when the lighs are switched on , which i thought would lead to the alternator but i checked the output and its a steady 14.75 volts , i suppose it could be the rectifier , would this show a different output reading if it was shot ??

  • 2 weeks later...

Just fixed a problem like this on my wifes 1.4 focus.

If you look inbetween the inlet manifold (black plastic manifold on front of engine) you will see 2 rubber pipes coming off the engine, 1 from cyl 1 and the other from cyl4.

These 2 pipes join a T-piece which connects to the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve.

One of these pipes might have a split.

The pipe connected to cyl 1 was split on my wifes car and caused a misfire when cold and poor idling.

the plugs should be gapped at 1.0mm they come pregapped at the old setting which was 1.3mm this can cause issues also use some lithium spray grease give a short squirt into the ht leads this stops moisture and for some reason helps its a ford thing that they dont tell you but it has cured many a misfire spray a bit on the coil end of the leads too that 9/10 times solves any issues
