Noisy Aircon Fan

Hey all,

Ive got a Mk1 Ford focus 2.0 litre, Ive had it almost a year now and its running fine, all but the air con, its noisy as hell, ive put it off all this time but i think im just about motivated to do something about it now.

When starting the car all is fine, as soon as i turn the dial all is quiet for about 3 seconds, then the air con fan kicks in and what sounds to go straight to 100% power to work, there is no difference in sound from the fans on settings 1-4 there all as loud as each other, and they are LOUD!! like head turning "what is that industrial sounding hoover noise?" loud!!!.

Ive worked in Air Con before and i know that if filters get blocked or there is low gas due to leaks they tend to work extra hard to get the same performance. I think (tell me if im wrong please) that my air con needs recharging and/or a new filter fitted, so my questions are as followed:

1: Is this a problem? are all ford focuses RIDICULOUSLY loud?

2: Where can i find the Air Con air filter, not the regular air filter? i.e. pic or guide? (ive searched can find anything on google)

Thanks in advanced!

Thanks in advanced

the aircon filter is the pollen filter im sure though to be honest i dont think thats youre problem if youre getting air through the vents and its the same on all settings its likely a fault with the switch for adjusting the airflow or a faulty compressor or sensor

First off thanks for the help you've given, been really great!

Hmmm okay, may not be an easy one to fix then. Ill change the air filter soon and report back, knowing my luck wont be good :P

Im pretty sure the switch works fine, the levels 1 through 4 all have different levels of airflow coming through the vents, its just that the noise on the outside of the car is always at max and never changes.

any ideas on where i can find the sensor and compressor?

Thanks again.

the heater blower is under the glovebox and should not be that hard to remove and inspect for roughness,

as I have a feeling that this will be your problem, here are some pics to help you
