Overheating Focus Cmax When Pulling Caravan

3 posts in this topic

hello all. i am new to this forum and am impressed with the knowledge displayed here, so thought i would ask a question!! My 1.8tdci 2007 focus c-max overheats when pulling my caravan up steep hills (normal hills ok!!). If i pull up the bigger hills gently, say 30mph in 3rd using hardly any throttle, no probs. Rest of time, hitched up or solo, no problems at all. Now the thing is, i have never ever heard the cooling fan working, except with air con engaged, and then only very slowly. If i open the bonnet at the end of a run with caravan on, top and bottom hoses are extremely hot, but absolutely no fan and gauge is sat at half way as per normal. caravan is about 1100kg, so is nowhere near too heavy. Even if it was, i wouldnt expect it to overheat on a normally steep hill, just be under powered and maybe overheat when pushed hard. any help appreciated, as i really do not want to sell this car because of this, it actually is a really nice towcar, and does have more than enough power. best regards, john.

I am no expert but I would suspect either a temp sensor on the rad is not working or a blocked hose? I have a 1.6tdi c-max and tow an Avondale van with no problems whatsoever so I would look at a cooling issue.

hi mate, thanks for replying. i had my car checked by a ford specialist shortly after posting, and there is apparently nothing wrong with it. there isn't a temp sensor in the rad, all done by engine manegement by a sensor on the cylinder head. the fan cuts in through 4 stages, and this is all working correctly. Ford technical's advice was quite surprising. they said to tell the customer (me) to change my driving style - i.e. back off the throttle on steep inclines.

If i could find something to fix / repair, i would crack on with it, but under all other driving conditions, the car is great, including towing on normal hills. regards john.
