ive got a 1.6TDCI and i get 22Psi max

Leemaxed has a 1.8TDCi focus with a boost gauge fitted too,

he should be able to advise too when he reads this.

He did ask what the STANDARD boost is

I have a 1.8 turbo diesel endura-de with a boost controller and I've also tuned the diesel pump a bit

When I first fitted the boost controller, before tuning the pump and with the controller turned right the way down it was getting around 12psi but when you fit an mbc (manual boost controller) the boost will increase slightly even before you turn it up so newbie wouldn't be far off when he said the standard boost was 10

You can't really use the figures for a tdci like lenny's as a guide for the tddi engine which the OP has, different fuel pump and ecu I believe

My tddi escort currently runs at about 17-18psi though I have ran it at 20, even 22 for a test, but you shouldn't run it at more than 20 really without a front-mounted intercooler and usually when you do a front mount intercooler conversion you're also fitting new and maybe stronger pipework. Running it over 20 with the stock top-mounted intercooler you run he risk of turbo pipes blowing off and/or splitting, damage to the turbo itself not to mention the chance of blowing your head gasket

One thing to understand tho, increasing turbo pressure without also increasing fuelling to match it does nothing for the performance of your car, this is where tuning your diesel pump comes in

You probably have a lucas diesel pump and there's loads of articles about tuning these on the web but there's more than one way to do it, the most comprehensive (possibly the best) guide I found is on the turbo diesel owners club uk website

thanks for the info on essential upgrading for running boost over 20psi

but i just want to inform, my 1.6TDCi is completly standard 90ps model with a standard front mount intercooler,

the only engine modification i have is the boost gauge and oil pressuire gauge fitted,

and at peak red line 4000rpm in third gear the ford racing boost gauge displays at the tip 22psi for a around 30seconds then drops lower, but normal driving around town or at 120kmh on the motorway it reads 15-20 psi

how does the boost controller work?

Ah, on the tddi like I have the intercooler's mounted above the exhaust manifold ... I've heard them described as an 'interwarmer' lol

I don't realy know anything specific about the tdci (22psi at stock tho seems quite a lot to me), just know a little bit from reseaching stuff about the tddi because I have one, boost dropping off though is I believe caused by insufficient fuelling needed to maintain max boost

The tddi has a mechanical fuel pump so you can adjust fuelling by turning screws, but I don't think the tdci is mechanical in which case if you want gains a remap might be worth considering, do more for your car than just a boost controller, especially if the max boost drops off because the remap (should) aim to give best possible 'balance' between boost and fuel/air flow

Incidentally, other than accelerating up to speed, in fifth with the throttle opened up enough to be boosting away at 15-20 on a motorway mine would be doing well in excess of 120kmh (that's 75mph right?), once up to that speed if I back off the throttle to maintain 120kmh steady it's barely boosting at 10psi

Which makes me wonder if someone might have increased the boost on yours but neglected to do anything about fuelling, just seems to me if it's at stock to be producing that much boost you just gotta be putting your foot down pretty hard and only doing 75mph?
