the smell fumes is from middlesbrough :P haha nah i get this smell only very slightly on a cold start...had the bonnet open once and found a small poof of smoke coming from back of engine block...i put it down to being normal operation and from what i read the egr can do this.

as for the juddering, check to see if you have any fault codes logged, check the dash trick sticky thread on this forum, it will tell you. other than that i had juddering at high speeds...get a mech or someone competant with cars to check fuel filter.

Aaaah the good old (potential) Fuel Filter problem... Damn the cheapness!

I agree with the EGR valve comment - how many miles has your car done, and when was the last major service?the fumes could be coming from the engine block and through the cabin filter. Is the car overheating at all? and if you had to describe the fumes, would they be smokey, diesely, or just a tainted smell?

I wonder if there isnt a full seal around the cyclinders / plugs (not an expert by any means) but I would say check it. If it smells of diesel, it could just be vapour of the diesel leaking and then coming through the engine bay / cabin filters and thus your smell!

i get exactly the same smell on a cold start after the car has sat for around 4 days. but it lasts no more than 30 secs tho...like i said before i get a little "poof" of black smoke, from back of engine block, i put it down to oil burning near egr and being totally normal. (not totally sure of location of egr) but when the smoke comes from back of engine its definately getting near cabin filter and bang...its in the cabin.

but if yours is lasting a long time definately something is wrong and needs to be checked out.

I was close!! not too bad for a non-mech! lol Glad you got it sorted, hopefully it wasnt a cost of £100 diagnosis and 0.30p for the part!
