Focus (2005>) Air Con Not Working

Hi Guys,

Right, puzzled over this one, as ive tried pretty much everything.

All the fuses are ok as are the relays.... When I press the AC button, the light comes on, but no cold air.... Checked the AC had gas in at work, and it's full, so no issues there.

Now is there a safety cut off switch for this at all, as I dont think it worked after I hit a pheasant 2 years ago (no leaks in the AC rad either before anyone says that)

Ive also checked the mag clutch does not engage on the AC motor... this is why I thought it may have been a fuese/relay but ive checked them all and they are working correctly (under the dash and under the bonnet)

Anyone else got any ideas? - I also have ticking noise coming from the belt when the car is cold (front drivers side bottom (where the ac pump is))

Cheers

James

Am i right to guess that you have not used the A/C for two years; since the accident with the pheasant?

If you have not used for such a long time, it may be gummed up.

The mag clutch is signalled from the ECU and hopefully you should get a fault code from it to determine the failure.

can you hear the compressor clutch clicking in and out? if not the compressor is seized given the cost of repairing that ide just do without aircon as it would need a new compressor evap canister full flush and refil from past experience 700 quid easy if it is clicking on and off there are various sensors connected to the aircon pipes if any are faulty then it would prevent it frfom blowing cold but the compressor would work

sorry never read that one

it looks like the compressor has ceased snapping the shaft so the evap etc will be full of particles an independant specialist will sort it all out for around 700 theres no point buying a second hand compressor as they can be just as bad or fail and since you cant drain the syatem and fill it and flush youreself it will coist or just leave it and go without aircon.

aircon must be used for 30 mins a month to prevent it from ceasing up and the seals failing

Got exactly same problem, Air con not working, Kwik Fit stated compressor was siezed. but check the following first, ( you need a second person for this).

1. Have your friend look down at the compressor from the under the bonnet.

2. Start your engine with air con ON.

3. Your compressor clutch should engage briefly, then disconnect.

4. if it does, then your compressor is fine ( dont believe the guy from Kwik Fit :))

5.You can check your compressor by removing the AC relay, then put a jumper wire into connections 3 and 5 ( look at the relay base if youre not sure where they are corresponding to)

6. Your compressor will engage the clutch. ( this test eliminates a faulty compressor. AND all the wiring to it.)

7. With a test meter, check the voltage at the relay , you should have 12 Volts at pin 1.

8. If so and your Air Con doesnt work, it means that your ECU is not grounding the relay to operate the compressor.

So, we now arrive at my point, where the hell is the damned ECU. Mine is a 2002 ST170. Hope this helps.

it is one of two video's, so you need to watch part two as well. He does not solve a fault because there isn't one, he is just showing you how best to go about it.

I found the easiest way to check the relay is OK, is by swop it with the horn relay, and try the horn.

OK,

Weve tested the compressor and it works if bypassing the relay.

Now weve checked the pressure switch which is located next to the Brake fluid resovoir and there is no voltage going to the switch, so does anyone have a wiring diagram for this?

I have a 2006 mk2 Ford Focus 2.0 diesel mileage around 100k. My AC works when I'm driving and recently I have changed my timing belt, 2 weeks later since when I put my AC on for like 30minutes my car over heated and I lose power in my car till I switch of my ac and the temperature  gauge goes back to its normal position. Can someone help what this could be

I have not heard of anything like that before.

The extra mechanical load put on the engine by the a/c is very small, compared to its normal power output. The a/c condenser will put a little heat into the coolant radiator & into the engine bay, but again it is very small.

More information may be needed. Like did the a/c get cold, like it usually does. Did the engine really overheat, possibly with steam venting from the coolant tank, and loss of coolant, or was it just the gauge? Does it do it repeatedly & consistently?

It may be an engine fault, which is made marginally worse, and hence becomes more noticable, when the a/c is on.
