Engine Loses Power - 2000 Mondeo Verona 1.8 Petrol

Hi guys,

I think that this is down to a broken catalytic converter - the engine revs freely fine but under load it gets to about 2000 revs then acceleration is very very slow, no power and takes an age to get to 60 70mph on the motorway. There is a bit of a whine - like a sucking sound and the exhaust just got slightly louder and rattlier. I think the Cat is knackered and is blocking the exhaust flow but any advice would be appreciated (I am going to replace the HT leads, plugs, oil change etc. anyway) Also should I buy a Ford cat or an aftermarket replacement? and if the latter what is a reliable make or supplier/ (sorry, Im new - am I allowed to ask that?)

i would put 50p on it being the cat .. my escort did the same years ago and that was down to the cat.. i fitted a aftermarket job and it worked fine , was£150 (inc fitting)at the time ,but that was 2004;-)

You have answered your own question if you are aware the cat has had it, I'd check the back box aswell though, an aftermarkect cat will do the job as good as a ford one.

Just to let you know, I changed the Cat at the weekend and it was knackered and was causing back pressure under load and resulted in no power above about 2000 rpm. New one sourced for £48.00 including delivery, which was cheap and I fitted it OK (after drilling one of the studs out of the exhaust and using a bolt instead!) Serviced the old girl (the car not the wife!) and she runs like a dream again. Now if only I can figure out the water leak!!!
