Hi, I took my car to the garage as when i accelerated the engine would cut out and lose power. I took the car to the garage and he charged me £325 to replace the speed sensor, carry out a service and put the mot on the car. I went all of 18 miles and the same problem seems to have come back. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I have only just purchased the car and I dont think the speed sensor would have broken after 18 miles. Do you think this is something the mechanic should repair for free as it seems to be the same fault!!

Are there any warning lights illuminated on the dash? what work was done in the service, did he give any details of this? I would check spark plugs and the leads going to the coil pack and the coil pack itself.

was this ford and were diagnostics done? for onr 325 quid to do that is a jolk and you were ripped off ford will do a speed sensor for arond 70 quid an mot is 35-40 and a service wouldnt have cost 200 secondly the symptoms could be many things and without diagnostics its a hit or miss any half decent mechanic would know a speed sensor doesnt cause it to cut out when flooring the car its the opposite the speedo needle would drop to zero when slowing and the engine cut out it could be the fuel pump or injector certainly sounds like a fuel system issue even a blocked fuel filter will starve the engine which is whats happening to you when you fllor it the engine isnt getting enough fuel and cuts out i would take it back and explain that to him and ask how he diagnosed a speed sensor pesonally ide take it elsewhere. if you bought the car private then likely youve inherited the reason they sold it if it was from a garage take it back to the garage you bought it from and have it repaired free
