Non-Running 2010 Ford Focus

hii all, i have a ford focus 1.6 tdci mk2 on a 2010 plate, the car had a under dash fire and previous owner changed the wiring loom, ecu, key and ignition barrel

the issue is ... the immobilizer light is flashing when ignition is on, car is not communicating with diagnostic scanners. the car does not turn over at all, and displays the following on the lcd display

'Transmission Failure' ( the car is manual)

we've checked all fuses, relays and wiring plugs with no issues to report..

just wondering if anyone on here can help me solve the problem...

thanks in advanced

so, 2010 car, and it had a fire under the dash, but only the one wiring loom was replaced?

Sounds to me like there is more wire damage within, or possibly component damage to the rear of the dash sending a few duff signals...

How did the fire occur? whilst the car was moving? whilst asleep? I would be concerned that if the car was in use at the time, that a power surge / excessive heat melted the wires causing the fire, but that damage most likely would have spread to the likes of the fuseboard / other relays causing untold damage...

Methinks it is knacked.

It is dead, bereft of life, it rests in peace, It is an ex car.

Sorry, another long busy night shift. <_<

Totally agree, someone did a shoddy repair job on the wires.

Probably got melted insulation and carboned earth points all over the place.

I'd also reckon that the ECU is buggered too.

Would suprprise me at all...! zu11y - how much did you pay out for the car? cant you take it back?

im nt quite sure how the fire started however everything under the dash has been replaced, ecu and all the start gear was replaced, everything else seems to be working, i.e. headunit , lights, heaters ive checked the fuse box, everything electrical and all seems fine

sorry i cant really offer any advice, but surely if it is 2010 plate it would still be under warrenty? can you not just take it in to ford??

Or is the service history not complete?

There must be more to it than just the ECU , there are other parts i'm sure that all need to sync With the ECU before it will start ,has it been into Ford For the ECU to be set to the Car

hi really appreciate the advice but i think the issue needs some clarification.

after the fire the car has had the following items from a donor vehicle

ecu

transponder

key

ignition set up

fuse box

wiring loom

and the clocks

everything else on the car works fine, all the lights inside and out, central locking, windows, radio etc all work

so i am pretty lost as to why the car still refuses to start, its as if the immobilizer is switched on and not turning off

Do you know if the car was exact same model? , I'm still sure its not as easy as just a straight swap of parts.

Also the Immob would need to be set to the key wouldn't it ?

just posing a few questions that might trigger an idea

yes the parts were taken from the same model focus, as far as i am aware the key doesn't need programming as the ecu, immobilizer, clocks, transponder, ignition barrel all came from the running donor car

surely if you disconnect the ecu system, when re-installing would you not need to program it all in again evan if your putting back in the same car?? sort of like a computer, are you sure its not been restored to factory settings so to speak??

it might just be a case of popping into ford and getting them to programe it???

again just an idea

I'd reckon the ECU and PATS2 units need recoding.

Are the keys the originals or from the donor car?

Sounds like the immobiliser

Isn't recognising the transponder chip in the key.

The PATS2 receiver is a ring around the ignition barrel. As to the immobiliser unit I'm not totally sure.

Someone here will know for sure.

Sorry it just dawned on me - why were these parts taken from a donor vehicle? If the car is 10 plate then why were the parts not new? And a dash fire surely would be warranty case?

hii this was a customers car , he bought it in with a new wiring loom fitted, and my self and other garage staff did the rest of the repairs,

however the customer could not afford to pay the bill so he asked if i could buy the car for 2.5k so i did.

the car has cost me 2.5k thats it hence im trying to repair it.

the car is not under warranty as i beleive it was a written off after the fire but later brought back from insurance.

just to confirm the parts were from another 2010 focus which had severe rear end damage

so if the insurance bought it back they would have payed for the cost of repair... so how could he not afford the bill??

all seems abit suspect to me mate, have you contacted ford... they could do a diagnosticks test and let you know what they think is wrong?

Sounds very weird indeed, are they really telling you there was an excess of 7500 pounds worth of damage after the fire? so they wrote it off? if they gave up on a motor so young, then there has to be more to it. as Alkyz said, it sounds a bit unusual.

I would just tell you that, if you bought it for so little, and you are happy to chuck some money at it, you would be best taking it to ford, so they charge you (say) £100 to diagnose the issue and give you a full breakdown - if you can fit the parts yourself, then even better, but I really query if the car is worth it. If it has blown another CPU / PATS Immobiliser, then its not in good stead.

My main question still stands, how did the fire happen, as it should have been covered by warranty if it was a faulty wiring problem, otherwise if it was arson or accidental fire (cigarette) then I can understand the lack of warranty...

thts the problem the fire occured whilst the car was off so its hard to say how it started. as mentioned before the car is not communicating with the scanner at all.

but the main question as before is that, have i missed any other bits in the starting system, there may be something small which is part of the ford starting systgem which i have missed

Hi mate,

it would be worth purchasing a haynes manual for the car, i have one and it could be alot better than it is but it helps alot when it comes to cable reference etc. its not a book you could read and know everything because its not written in that way, its more of a book you can refer to and study wiring configurations.

the haynes for the 2005 mk2 is the same manual for the mk2.5 here is a link to the cheapest one on ebay:

simple question did the loomcome from an automatic car? sounds to me with the transmission failure that it did the wiring will not be the same as it will connect to the auto box ecu and spaghetti into various other systems and wires and the ecu will be set up for an automatic in short the wiring though the colours look the same is different so the ecu is different etc etc had it with a mate on a ford escort van the end result was to take the loom out and buy the exact same loom from the exact same make and model making sure it was a manual and that worked.

some people just take what they think is the right parts and dont check correctly so ide suggest looking at the part numbers and checking them out with a dealer to see if its fora manual or auto first

dont take this the wrong way but a guy brought in a car he couldnt afford to get fixed to get fixed then just happens to want to sell at a rather low and silly price despite the issues seems a bit coincidental to me perhaps he knows something you dont.

Makes a little sense now, i'm beginning to lean towards the ECU being from an auto and it's looking for data from an auto transmission and isn't getting it so is naffing up everything else.

I'd definitely check the part number / serial with ford.

Looks like the previous owner cocked it up and couldn't be arsed to get it right.

Given how complex the autos are with wires going from the gearbox to various sensors via the ecu and branching into other wiring its all i can think of the trans failure refering to the fact that it thinks there should be an auto box and assuming there may be a connection between the auto gearbox and the pats system
