shabazmo Posted February 23, 2012 Share Posted February 23, 2012 My Mk7 fiesta has a fault whereby the reverse gear sometimes crunches when engaging. I have read this a few times old posts and thought it was something I have to live with. Recently it seems to have got a bit worse. What I would like to know is if there is a fix for this problem or do I just have to live with it. It would be good to know before the waranty runs out. It's so annoying, especially on hills... Mine slips out sometimes if I haven't put the clutch in twice, more often than that it just grind the gears. Stewie316 Posted February 24, 2012 Share Posted February 24, 2012 Most of the time i get the crunch when engaging reverse used to get a noise when it wasn't fully engaged as well. I've had it in with ford and they said they re-oiled the gear box but it still did it. Might try first gear then reverse though. It's just one of those things that you have to live with. orcomma Posted February 28, 2012 Share Posted February 28, 2012 the fact there is no synchromesh in reverse isn't a fault - its a facet of most manual gearboxes, because in order to reverse, two mismatched gears need to be connected using an idler, and by definition this cannot be synchromeshed because the two outer gears are mismatching. im still not sure why would you want to select reverse without being in neutral first anyway? as for popping out of gear - that is a fault, and warrantyable Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

james_60 Posted March 16, 2012 Share Posted March 16, 2012 Hi Folks It Is Perfectly Normal. There is no Syncromesh on Reverse. Good Drivers Push the clutch down. Wait for the gearbox to stop rotating (5 sec) then engage reverse. Its not a problem with the car. If you love your car and intend keeping it perhaps get the gearbox oil drained and Castrol Manual SMX-S Gear oil it is a fully synthetic SAE 75W/85 manual gear oil. zahtar Posted November 5, 2012 Share Posted November 5, 2012 I have this sometimes as well. What I do is press the clutch, if it doesn't engage, I leave it neutral and then retry. I NEVER force it in. I believe it is the worst idea. Something that works too, is engaging 4th grear and then reverse. For some reason this works, but I don't know why. My borther, owner of mk6 facelift, said this to me and it works :) Another thing: Having difficulty to engage a gear, and having it slip out are two totally diffrent things. Magenta Posted November 8, 2012 Share Posted November 8, 2012 Having to "Double declutch" was/is normal with non-synchro gearboxes and reverse is non-synchromesh. Just release the clutch in neutral once before going into reverse usually works. Maybe the Fiesta gearbox is more prone to it, I don't know but I would have thought that Ford would use the same gearbox on the smaller engined Focus too. Do some Focus owners have the same problem ? Bladerunner Posted November 11, 2012 Share Posted November 11, 2012 Been a while since I posted, well after reading this post I have to say I have had my Fiesta not engage correctly into reverse, and when it does this it make a noise you would associate with gears not meshing correctly ! Now it has covered almost 8 thousand miles since the middle of May and is 2 years old today, service done yesterday. Before anyone tells me to double clutch prior to engaging reverse don't bother, have we time warped back to the 1960's when cars apparently needed this, we are in the 21.st century so if Ford gearboxes need this then what the heck is going on! I have never had this happen to a car before so there must be some problem with the gearbox and how it has been designed. It has jumped out of gear at least 4 times now, and yes I can drive , I always look after my cars and always wait a few second after coming to rest before engaging reverse. So what is wrong with my gearbox or is it the breed of the beast!! If it continues it will go back to Ford dealer.
