Tyre Recomendations?

Does anyone have recomendations for tyres for a MkII Focus 1.6 LS petrol 55 plate ? I don't want to pay a fortune as I dont do that much motoring. Mainly just my daily commute to work and back. (All non motorway driving). All suggestions welcomed.

I just got new tyres on the front, and the cheap ones where £90 each and the top of the range bridgestones where £120 each so I went for the bridgestones, I think it's worth paying abit more for decent tyres, I have had cheap tyres before and have had terrible wheel shake even after having the tracking and balancing done.

I've had mine for 2 years now still got loads of tread good tyres and only £65 ish each

If you bought standard 205/55/16 the prices you stated are total rip off. On the other side I'm not surprised as prices at local tyre specialists are very high. In November I bought a set of all season tyres over the internet - including fitting I saved over 200 pounds compared to local best price I was quoted.

I would go for asymmetric tyres with rim flange protection of reputable manufactures, for example:

Mostly i use Dunlops on my cars because i like them (Sport maxx is a favourite of mine) but I used Michelin Primacy HP and i have to say, they seem to never wear out. They are not exactly cheap, but they last for ages (used them on a car for 4 years and they still looked almost new). The bad part about them is they don't break as good as others, but for a town car they are excellent in my opinion.

Had a nice experience with Nokian tires, Continentals are good but they don't hold well in corners.

Vredestein are very good tires BUT they wear like butter, as do Pirelli (their only good tires are the expensive range).

Goodyear are good overall i think, but they are kind of loud and squeak in corners, like Michelins do also :)

All in all my op would be

Dunlop sport maxx for summer

Goodyear F1 asymetric for summer

Michelin sport contact 3 for summer

Hankook Ventus V12 summer tires also, the only model from this guys that i like especially if it's raining

Goodyear 7+7 for winter (did not test the new model)

Any Nokian will do also for winter, and then the rest :)

As a good city all rounder tire, good comfort, good price for the amount of time you will use them, a bit laud, i would recommend Michelin Primacy HP.

Try some Barum Bravuris 2 made in conjuction with Contnental, Ive got them on the Mondeo, great tyre at twice the price

I'll let you know the model of them but I've got a set of toyo's on mine, I think they are the Toyo CF1 88V. I got all 4, wheel balance, new valves, nitrogen, wheel alignment front and rear and disposal for £300

i got a set of haida tyres on my rear and they are really good very grippy long lasting and quiet on the road

stay away from Michelin I had two on the front of my car and had to replace them due to the tyre walls having large cracks in. It's an MOT failure and also they were leaking air badly! was loosing 10PSI a week and with a lot of driving I'd have to pump up after a drive. checked them at 2 different garages, paid to get them re-sealed and in the end just bought a new set. they still had lots of tread on and were only from 2008 (new on the car and date is printed on all tyres),

I think i got some toyo tyres seem very good so far, I've had them two months.

same here with michelins . had 4.5 mm tread on back and 3mm on front only done 19,000 miles on 07 reg ..tyres fitted from new ( no motoway use) all 4 were cracked on side walls ..just had to replace them 4x uniroyal £265 inc bal/vat..

thats odd my old mans citroen had exactly the same issue treads were good sidewalls had cracked he was well and truly not amused

There was a bad batch of Michelins a couple of years ago, I had some on my Citroen C5, Michelin replaced them FOC

About those tires wearing on the sides .... you know that any tire after about 4 years no matter if you use it or not will get old and crack right ?

What i mean is that when you buy a new tire, if the tire is made in let's say 2008 it will last you for a few thousand miles then it will start to crack ... why ? because rubber loses it's proprieties in time, it gets stiff.

So, no matter what tire you buy, you should always look at the fabrication date. Usually it will be in this fashion : ww yyy. It will say the week number and the year when it was made.

When you buy a new tire, that is usually 50% more in any other place, chances are that tire is very old, and it won't last long, it will not break well, it will wear VERY fast, and you are better of with a second hand newer one.

Has anybody tired the Avon ZZ3s? From all the digging around I've done they seem to be a decent all rounder and price is not bad either. Just not sure how well they are on the MK2 Focus.

try tyrereviews.co.uk its a list of tyres for the mk2 with owner ratings on grip etc the avons are there halfway down the list i think.that way you have a list and can check to see what suits youre budget

Fitted 4 new Avon ZV5s to my MK2. Only after driving the car with the ZV5s I've realised how terrible the A-One Duran tires on the fronts were, poor traction and understeered. Car had the Duran's on it when I bought it and they have pushed 14.5k miles with a bit of tread left. Not sure when the rear Pirellis were fitted but they were due replacement.

First impression after 165 miles on a wet A road and the M25 this weekend with 5 adults and a full tank of fuel I must say the ride was smooth, steering precise and plenty traction, as for road noise it seems the same.

After 8 months and 9k odd miles my ZV5 fronts are on 5mm and rears on 6mm, wear is even across the tires, front wheel aligment re-done a month ago, felt the steering change. Mostly A road driving.

It all depends on mileage and driving style. But I have found the Goodyear Eagle NCT5's to be an excellent hard wearing tyre
