What Do You Reckon?

I've got my car booked in with a local (ish) Tuner this coming tuesday for a re-map & K&N panel filter... My focus is the 2.0 TDCI with 136BHP. The chap reckons the re-map & filter should show somewhere in the region of 168BHP, plus a stack more torque

£280 all in (reduced from £340 all in) Fair price do you reckon? The fella said he keeps the old standard map and will re-instate if ever needed.

I was hoping so... It's from the same company that custom built my stainless twin exhaust a couple of years ago... The fella was absolutely precise and accurate with the zorst build... I'd dropped the car off with him at 9am, returned at 10pm...left the garage at 3.30AM with a huge smile on my face! (if a little sleepy)... But he never built my exhaust, he hand crafted a one off work of stainless art, and it was well worth the wait!

I do hope the re-map is a little quicker though

He says the re-map can be tweaked to take into account the twin exhaust so's i can get the best i can from it... We'll see come tuesday!

Just out of interest, if the remap does not produce what he promised do you get your money back?

Obviously there needs to be a margin, but he's suggesting (promising?) a 32bhp gain so if he can only produce let's say 15-20bhp extra, would/should you still pay?

A few bhp different to his claim is fine, but perhaps you should agree beforehand what constitutes a successful remap, and what does not.

Apologies if this sounds cynical, but it's always worth protecting yourself before handing over the money.

you should have no problem seeing 168bhp on the 2.0tdci...

I know a custom mapper with dyno that has pushed 175,

No, what you say is very wise...

Having dealt with the chap in the past, he knows what he's talking about, and is VERY thorough, dare i say... i trust him! (and i don't bat that statement around very freely)

We both took the car for a long, hard road test using mixed driving to settle in the new mapping (the ECU learns driving style).

The car hasn't been rolling roaded yet, but a conservative estimate i'd say there's 30% more power on part throttle, and maybe as much as 50% more power on half throttle in the middle of the torque band... Torque steer is now noticeable, but manageable.

The torque has gone through the roof!

My tuner suggested uprating the clutch and Dual mass flywheel from the sachs items, to LUK, thankfully this was done last year.

The car is now so tractable, i'm seeing the same rate of acceleration from 30mph in 6th, as i used to get (pre-mapping) in 4th gear...

I took the car for a very gentle 150 mile run straight after the mapping to bed in (part A road, part motorway cruise) The road test plummeted the average fuel economy from 52MPG to 46MPG! After the bedding in drive, i'd got the MPG back up to 53.MPG (the best i've acheived since ownership).

I can well believe it mate! This dark art of playing with maps really is something else!

It's early days i know... and i'm the first to admit this is the 1st time i've had any of my cars re-mapped, so i really didn't know what to expect in gains... But i must admit i was surprised at just how much extra power (and more importantly) torque i'm feeling... I'm a bit of a plodder at driving 99% of the time, but every once in a while i do like to stretch the old legs of the focus... pre-mapping, i'd get a visible fair old puff of black smoke on the slip road to the M6 when i gunned it in 4th then 5th... That now seems to have completely dissapeared.

And another unexpected benefit... My car (in fact, every diesel i've ever owned) sounded, and felt lumpy on a cold start, that would gradually fade as the engine warmed... each morning since the mapping, as soon as i've pulled from the drive, the engine would behave as if it was warm! Not only sounding smoother, but felt smoother too! How's that work?

Out of interest who did you use to remap the car?

Be careful if putting your foot down in higher gears at lower speed, this would result in clutch slip and fly-wheel vibrations - too much of this will cause damage!!

Perhaps feeling smoother as the fuel delivery will have changed.

Have you had the car rolling roaded to see the actual BHP?

Injection timimg, fuel delivery, air flow, etc etc etc... will all affect how the car runs, as all this is changed that could well be the reason why it feels smoother etc from cold.

If clutch and flywheel are in good nick you should be fine, as has been previously stated, if you can afford it, go single mass or uprated dual mass flywheel, and depending on what future plans are, uprate the clutch... saves bother later on!
