Fiesta Metal - Stolen

We are getting a 4-way camera installed, with the feed being written to disc, and also into the TV in my bedroom - so that will offer some peace of mind. The only time I worry about the car is at home (because in work it is under constant guarded CCTV, and with barrier-ed entry/exit) so ill be alerted straight away by the alarm pager or the tracker if anything happens, and can then look at the CCTV from the TV.

I'll speak to the insurance on monday and see what sort of discounts they can offer, I mean they are all thatcham approved so I'll definitely get a little off.

The guy must have some sort of info , but the removal of the indicator and shorting out.

Front indicator is part of the headlight so they would have to smash that and rear indicator there would be no wiring there that would short the alarm system.

Maybe a 10 years ago i heard of this happening , but i would still go for the cloned key , someone sat waiting for you to press the remote and get you code , then maybe the laptop perhaps.

Maybe the side indicator? Plus, I never use the fob remote due to keyless entry - I use the button on the door handle to double-lock the doors.

I can't say to much on here but the method stated is the same method that was used to bypass ford alarms back in the 80's / 90's. Ford REALLY have not moved on or learnt anything car security since then, I think this is truly shocking. By now ford should be using a system were the code generated by the security system / key changes each time the key / entry method is used thus making it impossible to clone. Most other car manufacturers are now using this technology.

If what I heard is true, then I absolutely agree, However I have also heard that the Ford immobiliser works on a rolling code system, so would be very difficult to take - however for all technology out there, there are always ways to crack it.

Thinking about it now, I am skeptical about the indicator/shorting/blowing fuse explanation, because it seems so simple and was apparent decades go, that Ford's surely must have created a fix for it.

Either way, there must be some sort of work-around similar, because I had an anti-tilt alarm (plus lorry of the size would have to reverse down my road, and would be heard), no glass, both keys still in ownership, and even if you walked away from the car without locking it (which obviously I know 100% I did not do), the car would lock it self after 1 minute. Something has failed somewhere.

I'm looking forward to speaking to the insurance company tomorrow to see if they can shed any light on any theft trends, and possibly give some ideas on how similar new cars have been taken over the past few months.

Sorry to hear of your car being stolen bro... If it isn't chained up to your bed, then i'm afraid any motor is fair game to a pro gang intent on stealing it...

A tale from a close friend of mine from MANY years ago..

We're talking early 80's here.. My best mate's brother had a really nice Mk2 escort (mexico?/harrier?) It was the 4th car in the family, and "belled up" like there's no tomorrow (for the day) It was even chained to an anchor point through the floor of the drive!

Here's what the thieves must have done to get hold of his motor...Silently broke into his house, got into his bedroom, and snook the keys from his jeans pocket which was discarded on his bedroom floor, then taken every single set of keys in the house, his mum's (handbag) His dad's (jacket pocket) the other brother (jeans pocket again on his bedroom floor) They tied the dog up using his own doglead in the kitchen, and taped the dogs mouth up with duck tape.

They moved 3 family cars from the drive, took the escort, put the other 3 cars back up the drive, locked them! And returned every set of keys directly where they had been taken from, except of course the escort keys! They even knew the secret location of the key to the floor anchor, and that had not been broken, simply unlocked, then locked again... Apart from the tied up and taped up family pooch, there ws no evidence anybody had been in the house, all the family cars, and house had been re-locked, i think a bit of a !Removed! take for my mate's brothers obsession for car security...He often bragged his car was "unstealable"... Like i said... If they are determined enough, they will take it....

Best of luck this theft doesn't affect you long term mate, be that psychologically, or financially...

Just today I have heard of 2 more Fiestas (both 2010 onwards) being stolen in similar circumstances in the south-east area (within an hour, no glass, no alarm detected). Apparantly the police are preparing to launch a large-scale investigation on Fords, internally. These new immobilisers work on rolling-code security, and so I can't understand how someone could by-pass it within the hour without a key.

A nice lady from the insurance company called today, have booked in a 30-45min 'phone interview' with her on Wednesday morning. That's longer than the phone interview I had to get my job! But quite looking forward to it anyway, hopefully she will be able to answer some of my questions and possibly shed some light on the situation.

P.S. Apologies to the Mark M.K. regarding the comment I made, speculating how thieves are working - probably for the best for it to be censored.

Judging by what I have read it does seem plausible that Ford havent learned a lesson, but 3 fiesta's now, clearly something is wrong! because they are a common car, tehy wont stand out when they are nicked, its a shame, but hopefully Bradley, you will get your compensation soon! did you take out the GAP cover to get every penny back, or are they offering you less than your value? (I know its not complete yet, but have they given indication?)

I have a 'new car clause' on my insurance, so because it is under 1 year old they will replace like for like. I have a 30-45min "phone interview" with the insurance company tomorrow, so we will see!

Going on the assumption that the car's are having the handbrake cut, then being wheeled away and straight lifted onto a truck at the end of the road... Would it be an idea to (if parked on the roadside) turn the wheels in towards the kerb? Surely that would cause these scumbags to make some noise, possibly alerting the owner in the process.

Great idea!

That reminds me of advice given by a Police driving instructor when I had a minibus driving refresher lesson. "When stopped in the centre of the road waiting to turn right, keep the wheels pointing directly ahead so if you get shunted up the back, you don't get pushed into oncoming traffic". Two weeks later when I had a rear end shunt, I thanked him for that advice.

Yeah, good advice. My car had an anti-tilt alarm, so I'm assuming they didn't do this, but definitely one to think of anyway.

I had a little chat with the insurance company today, also got a call back about 4.30 from the company they employ to purchase replacement cars for them - really helpful people actually. She has spoken to local dealers to get an idea of the availability of similar cars, and will give me a call sometime tomorrow morning when she hears back from them. Initially I have requested a car without keyless entry/start as I am slightly concerned as to the security of the devices - even the insurance company said lots and lots of similar cars are starting to go missing recently, and they are "extremely concerned" about it, due to the fact they are unaware of how they are being taken.

I've been told that I can mix and match in terms of added extras if I wish in order to compensate for the £425 loss from no keyless entry/start, so I will wait to hear back tomorrow and see what options I have available. Ideally I would like a car that has already been built, otherwise I will be in for a 8-12 week wait, which will be massively inconvenient for work etc.

In terms of alarm systems, does anyone have experience with the Viper 480XV? I am keen for a system with a similar 2-way pager/fob either way.

do you have to pay the excess on your insurance for claiming for a stolen car? sounds a totally bummer that they don't know how it was taken.

Good Question Mike, Bradley, I presume your premiums and NCB will also be lost?

Yeah, I have to pay my excess, but its not the full excess that I would have paid if I would have damaged the car. I lose 2 of my 4 years NCB (which is better than I expected to be honest), and from early quotes, my insurance will probably go up by about £400-500 per year (after I fit the alarm and tracker system).

I heard today, they have ordered the car (minus keyless entry/start, but plus the supaguard paint protection and a spare wheel), and it should be ready for collection next Wednesday! I have to say, the insurance company have been amazing, especially "Enigma" (the company RSA outsource the car replacing/buying to). The lady from there has kept me totally in the loop via email and phone all day today - really thankful to her.

I now need to chase up about having the alarm and tracker fitted next Wednesday at work, and begin trying to get cheaper quotes on my insurance (can't finalise a quote yet because I don't yet know the registration number). Anyone have advice about what insurers to try?

I really appreciate the help btw everyone.

Sometimes you just can't win.

I had it a while ago that someone stole my very distinctive valve caps.

Idiot put them on his car which was parked one street away.

I had great delight in pulling up in my work car and removing them right in front of him. :D

Bang to rights.

That's why i use locking ones now, even i can't get them off sometimes, and that's using the removal tool too.

Indeed, and its not just the actual car, it inevitably has some mental effects - I know in my case although the new car is being picked up in 2 days time, instead of excitement I am feeling genuine fear that it will happen again. Plus the added stress of sorting everything out.

Absolutely! When my Fiesta was keyed outside my house, I hated leaving it parked out of sight... in the end I cleared out the garage just to keep it in overnight for peace of mind.

There are some right toe rags out there. I hope the new measures you're putting in place Bradley give you some peace of mind.
