Croftfan
Hi all, For the first time yesterday i started my car it went through its usual quick system/engine check before i fire up the engine etc and a red light and noise sounded with a symbol of a fuel tank with 3 drops next to it advising to consult the guide and the "engine failed" - looked in the guide i have for the car and cannot locate anything for this icon? Can anyone help - the car started once i popped the bonnet and has been ok today.

james_60
thats what iam not sure about. it could very well be. i cannot remember as specific symbols are different in my focus. Jamie
james_60
there is another thread with a similar problem it talks about an oil can with a wavy line underneath it. Jamie
orcomma
if it is the water in fuel light, my advice would be to run it till almost empty then brim it with super diesel and give it a good spin down the motorway, to clear the system, then keep an eye on it, if it returns get it looked at for a failing seal
Croftfan
Thanks for your replies - will try take a picture of this. The car seems fine again today - hoping was just a random error.
james_60
If indeed there is water in the fuel then the fuel filter must be full. The problem on the other thread talks about fuel in the oil Jamie
Croftfan
Thanks James - any idea's how water could be indicated within the diesel? never had this before - hoping was just a random fault which it picked up and will now be ok - will take advice and burn off the remaining half a tank and see. dLockers
if it is the water in fuel light, my advice would be to run it till almost empty then brim it with super diesel and give it a good spin down the motorway, to clear the system, then keep an eye on it, if it returns get it looked at for a failing seal I disagree. It would be better to take it to half a tank and then brim it again - making the water more and more diluted Otherwise if there is any large quantity in there you will knacker the engine. Odds are it just got confused by condensation.

orcomma
but oil and water are immiscible, so they won't "dilute" (?)
Stoney871
Water will sit on top of the fuel and also combine temporarily when oscillated but will separate again when still.
dLockers
but oil and water are immiscible, so they won't "dilute" (?) So even more evidence towards brimming the tank rather than letting the water get into the engine surely? But yeah as already said, it won't float forever in a moving car. b1g_dav3
Yeah I'm gonna say don't let it get empty/low, keep it topped up and eventually the water will mix in moving fuel, plus just because it's immiscible doesn't mean some won't dilute into it. Water in a Diesel engine = ouch time, keep it out as best you can.

orcomma
i wholeheartedly withdraw my advice then though apparently there are additive chemicals you can get to evaporate the water from your tank if its really bad.
